Average contact hours
Most UTS subjects are taught as a mix of lectures and tutorials. Some subjects incorporate seminars, presentations, laboratory work and/or individual study. Lectures, tutorials, seminars or laboratory sessions normally total between 12 and 24 hours per week.

UTS has a high level of student diversity, in 2010:
31 per cent of students came from a non-English speaking background
46 per cent of students were born outside Australia
the student body spoke more than 180 languages other than English
largest language groups: English, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Arabic

Recent achievements

>UTS has been benchmarked world standard or above in approximately 80 per cent of its research by the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) report released by the Federal Government.

>Aviator, the smart wheelchair technology developed in the UTS Centre for Health Technologies, has been awarded third place in the Anthill SMART 100 Index (a list of the top 100 Australian innovations).

>The new created position of Sydney City Poet will be based on the UTS City campus in partnership with the UTS Centre for New Writing. This new position follows in the tradition of the poet laureate, a poet appointed by a government to compose poems for state occasions and other events.
