New Mobile Computing Degree in Australia

New Mobile Computing degree at the University of Wollongong

In 2011, smart phone sales were estimated to be 420 million units worldwide, a figure expected to exceed 1 billion by 2015.  Mobile devices including smart phones and tablets have changed the way people interact and communicate, both socially and professionally.  As these changes in user expectations are carried across to other platforms, the design features at the core of mobile computing are gaining influence in the broader software development community.

In recent years we have witnessed the rapid growth of ‘cloud computing’ and the increasing role of distributed systems technologies, all requiring a change in approach to delivering services to users of mobile platforms.

As the largest producer of IT graduates in Australia, the University of Wollongong is introducing a new Mobile Computing major into the Bachelor of Computer Science from Autumn (February) Session 2013.

Accredited by the Australian Computer Society, the degree will serve the professional needs of the fastest growing segment of the IT sector, producing well-rounded professionals who understand the complexities behind mobile systems.  The course combines studies in mobile design and usability, mobile technology infrastructure, including distributed systems, and mobile application programming.
