UK University applications down

Number of UK-born university applicants slumps by 8%

The number of UK-born students applying to start at UK universities this autumn has slumped by almost 8%, official figures show.

Statistics published by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas) reveal that 283,680 people have applied from within the UK, compared with 306,908 at the same point last year.

It is becoming more and more popular for students to study abroad. With Universities in Denmark offering University places to UK students with full government scholarships and the Netherlands charging as little as £1,500 per year, it's obvious why students are choosing to go elsewhere.

It's not only cheaper Universities that are attracting students though.

In Australia, the government is in the process of changing visa regulations. It has been suggested that students who go to Australia for their studies be given a post-study work visa. This can give students the first good bit of work experience that will make them stand out when applying for jobs back in the UK.

Work prospects are a lot more positive in Australia at the moment - levels of unemployment are very low and there are many different types of jobs that students could go into.

In Canada, this is very much the same story - students can go to Canada, spend time studying and then continue to work in Canada for up to 3 years.
