There are a diverse range of university and college programmes that qualify people for jobs on the NZ immediate skills shortage list.  Degrees Ahead can find you the most suitable course for your requirements and arrange all aspects of your application FREE of charge!   Once you have successfully enrolled for a course you accepot the place by paying the first semesters fees and are issued with your electronic conformation of Enrolment (eCOE).

The eCOE allows you to apply for a student visa for you and family online, you may be asked for a medical but its really very straight forward! The visa lasts for the duration  of your course. Have a look and see whats on offer at  Universities in New Zealand.

Working while studying

You can work part time while studying full time, under certain circumstances:

to meet course requirements for practical work experience, or during the Christmas and New Year holiday period if you are in a full-time course of study lasting 12 months or longer, and/or for up to 20 hours in any given week during the academic year if you are in full-time study:

  • at a private training establishment or tertiary institution and taking at least two academic years to complete, or culminating in a New Zealand qualification that would qualify for points under the Skilled Migrant Category, or in a full-time study course lasting at least six months, at a private training establishment or tertiary institution. 
  • Partners of Student Visa holders may apply for a Work Visa and Permit if they can show they are in a genuine and stable relationship and meet health and character requirements. Their partner must also be in New Zealand to study for:
  • Qualifications in areas of absolute skill shortage as specified in the Long Term Skill Shortage List; or Postgraduate qualifications.
  • Partners of Student Visa holders who meet the above criteria will be eligible for a Work Visa and Permit for the same duration as their partner's Student Visa.

Working in New Zealand Post Study

If you are a student with an offer of employment relevant to your qualification, you may be eligible for a work visa and for a maximum period of:

two years; or

three years, if you are working towards obtaining a membership or registration from a New Zealand professional association which requires more than two years of relevant practical work experience.

If you are a student who has completed a qualification in New Zealand, but you do not have a job offer, you may be eligible for a Graduate Job Search Work Visa for a maximum of 12 months. Then, when you have found a job, you can apply for a further visa for up to two or three years under the Study to Work category.

To be eligible for a Graduate Work Search Visa you must:

have successfully completed a qualification in New Zealand that would qualify for points under the Skilled Migrant Category apply no later than three months after the end date of the student visa for that qualification.  Provide evidence of a minimum of NZ$2,100 available to maintain yourself during your 12-month stay in New Zealand (we will accept traveller's cheques or bank documents in your name).

Partners of Student Visa holders may apply for a Work Visa and Permit if they can show they are in a genuine and stable relationship and meet health and character requirements.

Their partner must also be in New Zealand to study for:

Postgraduate qualifications.

Children of Students will have to pay school fees unless the student is studying a PHD.  

UK students who choose to study a PHD only have to pay domestic fees approx NZ$6000, their partners can work fulltime and children pay no school fees!
