Victoria ’s Postgraduate Certificate in Archives and Records Management and Postgraduate Diploma in Archives and Records Management provide flexible professional postgraduate programmes for graduates seeking employment in the archives and records management fields. The Certificate requires the completion of four courses which must be completed within two years of first enrolment. The Diploma comprises eight courses, and can be completed over one intensive full-time year or over three years part time. Once the Certificate has been completed, the courses may be transferred to the Diploma. All these courses are offered by the School of Information Management on campus and by distance, and are all internally assessed. Students on campus may, with approval, substitute other courses from the Master of Information Management (MIM) degree. The core courses are designed to ensure that graduates have the knowledge, skills, and flexibility required of today’s archives and records managers to meet the challenges of a dynamic, changing employment environment. Both the Certificate and the Diploma share some core courses with the Master of Library and Information Studies programme (MLIS); these are carefully designed to meet the needs of both groups of graduates, and concern principles of information management common to both fields. Objectives The objectives of the Certificate and Diploma in Archives and Records Management are: - To provide graduates with the foundation for career in a range of organisations in local and central government, business, and institutional repositories;
- To give students knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices required internationally of an archives and records management professional;
- To give students an awareness of the total context in which information professionals operate;
- To give students the knowledge and attitudes necessary to work as archives and records management professionals in a bicultural partnership environment;
- To produce, through coursework and by example, students capable of working in a rapidly changing record-keeping environment;
- To give students the foundation for continuing professional development in their careers.
Admission criteria - An undergraduate or postgraduate degree of good academic performance.
- Work experience in a relevant area.
- Assessment of the applicant's suitability in terms of motivation, maturity, self-management, and communication skills.
The selection process is normally based on written applications and referees' reports although the selection panel may contact applicants and their referees to clarify some points in their application. Work experience in a records/archives or information centre is not a prerequisite but applicants who have such experience will benefit more from the programme. Students admitted to the programme without such knowledge will need to spend additional time mastering some concepts. Orientation requirement A requirement of the programme is that all new students must attend an intensive 4-day 'orientation', either in Wellington or Auckland. The orientation is held 1-2 weeks before the start of the first trimester. Certificate of Proficiency (COP) Most courses in the Archives and Records Management programme are available as a single course to information professionals with a degree who wish to update or extend their knowledge in archives and records management. The range and number of elective courses offered each year is dependent on the specialisations and availability of staff, visiting specialists, and student demand. Most electives are available by open learning. Acceptance is dependent on applicants holding a university degree, and in most cases an appropriate library qualification or extensive experience. Application is by letter stating qualifications and work experience, along with completed enrolment forms. Approval from the LIM Programmes Director and the coordinator of the course is required before enrolment. Upgrading from the PGDipArcRec to MLIS Individuals who hold the PGDipArcRec from Victoria University, and who obtained at least a B- average grade, may be eligible to undertake further study to upgrade to the Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS). The complete MLIS Programme normally consists of eleven courses totalling 180 points. The University will grant 120 credit points to holders of the PGDipArcRec who wish to upgrade to an MLIS. This makes it necessary for an upgrader to complete a further 60 credit points to complete the requirements for an MLIS. Individual programmes of study to upgrade to an MLIS will be dependent upon which courses were taken in the PGDipArcRec programme. When an upgrader has completed the required courses totalling 60 credit points, VUW will grant 120 credit points for the previous qualification and award the student with the MLIS. A written application should be made by completing the Postgraduate Enrolment Application and Mode of Study forms. Acceptance into the MLIS is at the discretion of the LIM Programmes Director.
