The MA (Applied) in Nursing is an opportunity for you to combine courses that interest you with a research project or thesis, where you research an area of your practice.

This Masters degree by coursework explores theory, practice and research in the nursing profession. Most full-time students complete the degree in two years but it can take up to six years. Some go on to apply for admission to our PhD programme.

The programme comprises eight courses (240 points):

  • Either four or six option courses - choose from the MA (Applied) schedule of courses), and
  • NURS 515, 518 or 519 (a research methods course), and
  • Either NURS 594 (a 90 point thesis) or NURS 555 (a 30 point research project).

Depending on the courses you take, you'll need to attend two or three Schools, usually in Wellington. We recommend that for each course you take you allow at least 12 hours a week per course. This includes class time and time for reading, writing and reflecting.
