The MN (Clinical) is designed to prepare nurses for advanced practice roles within their specialty areas. It will appeal to Registered Nurses seeking to develop their specialty knowledge and skills to contribute to meeting the requirements for nurse practitioner scope of practice. It's also an excellent opportunity for nurses with postgraduate certificates to continue to a Masters degree - and then perhaps to a PhD. This Master's degree by coursework is usually completed in four years by nurses studying part-time while working in clinical practice, but it can take up to six years, or two years full-time study. On completion, you may like to apply for our PhD programme. The programme comprises eight courses (240 points): Part 1 Either: - NURS 512 and one other course from 516 and 534-549 (a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing); or
- NURS 552 and one additional 30 point course from the MA (Applied) schedule of courses
Part 2 - NURS 518; and
- either NURS 550 or NURS 551 (for palliative care nurses) or NURS 523 (for mental health nurses)
Part 3 Either: - NURS 594 (a 90 point thesis) and one additional 30 point course from the MA (Applied) schedule of courses; or
- NURS 555 and three additional 30 point courses from the MA (Applied) schedule of courses
While you study for the MN (Clinical) you can apply for transfer to the MA (Applied) in Nursing. This is decided on a case-by-case basis, and all points can usually be transferred. Alternatively, you may be able to transfer to the Master of Nursing if you have satisfactorily completed the research course, have good grades and a supervisable topic. The MN (Clinical) is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
