About the MEd

  • The MEd provides a professional postgraduate qualification in education for teachers, educational administrators, public servants, researchers and industry educators/trainers.
  • You can select from a wide range of courses - you are able to tailor your study to suit your personal, professional and academic needs.
  • A number of the MEd courses are taught online, and this can provide the flexibility that you may be looking for.
  • Campus-based classes are held late in the afternoon, as block courses over several days, and at weekends, allowing you to continue working.

Entry Requirements

One of the following:

  • BA in Education
  • BEd or similar teaching degree
  • Undergraduate degree and either Diploma of Teaching or appropriate educational experience
  • Advanced Diploma of Teaching
  • or (without an undergraduate degree) extensive practical, professional or scholarly experience.

Programme Requirements

You must complete 240 points as follows:

  • courses for at least one of the MEd specialisations
  • an education research methods course (EDUC 532: Research Methods in Education on campus, or TEAC 502: Research and Professional Inquiry online)
  • either a thesis to the value of four courses (EDUC 592: Education Thesis or EDUC 594: Professional Practice Thesis) or if you are completing the MEd by coursework, a research paper (EDUC 580: Classroom Research Paper or EDUC 587: Research Paper) worth 30 points.

The MEd regulations require all participants to do a research methods course, and a thesis or research paper. However students who enrolled in the MEd prior to 2004 may be able to complete it under earlier regulations. For further information contact the Postgraduate Office.

Assessment

All EDUC courses are internally assessed by a combination of essays and assignments. In some courses, class tests or a presentation may replace one of the written assignments. There are no examinations.

At the beginning of each course students receive a Course Outline. This contains all the necessary information about the course including the number of lectures and tutorials, the course content, recommended readings, and information about the assignments.

Step off Qualifications to the MEd

  • Two courses from the MEd schedule will give you a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and Professional Development (PGCEPD)
  • Four courses will give you a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Professional Development (PGDEPD). These must include the courses for at least one of the MEd specialisations. This qualification is ideal for people who are involved in education areas other than school or early childhood centre teaching.
