This one-year masters was developed to fill a gap in the postgraduate market for hospitality professionals. The Master of Professional Hospitality Studies (MPHS) aims to encourage critical thinking and the application of theories, models and practices to hospitality management issues. This is important in an industry where there is growing demand for managers who can take on more demanding responsibilities in a highly competitive market. The MPHS is offered online, which allows you to fit study around your professional commitments and enables you to study from many locations throughout New Zealand and the Pacific region. Papers cover hospitality, financial and human resource management, and includes an applied project.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Hospitality sector managers with three years of relevant management experience who want to enhance their knowledge and qualifications in this field
  • In addition to their professional experience, successful applicants will have an undergraduate qualification and either one year of postgraduate study or equivalent management experience

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. 

 

THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE

Graduates will be prepared to assume senior management roles within the global hospitality industry or engage in further postgraduate study.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The MPHS is for experienced professionals who wish to enhance their senior management and leadership skills. Most managers will complete this programme to advance their professional knowledge
and capabilities. Graduates may choose to move into education or other employment, or into a research based programme.

 

FURTHER STUDIES

Graduates who wish to further their academic and research studies may apply for entry to the Master of International Hospitality Management (240 points) before they complete the MPHS. They may achieve the award of the Master of International Hospitality Management by completing a course of study and research including a research methodology paper and a dissertation or thesis. If a student completes the MPHS and wishes to pursue further study, 90 points will be credited toward the MIHM. Alternatively, a student who has completed the MPHS may apply for admission to the Master of Philosophy, subject to meeting the pre-requisite research methods requirement and preparation for the area of chosen study.
