About this program
The two-year Graduate Diploma of Dentistry is part of the integrated suite of degrees in oral health that will allow graduates to apply for professional registration as a Dentist. To be eligible to apply for registration as a Dentist, students need to complete five years of study in Dentistry and meet the Dental Board of Queensland requirements. Upon successful completion of the three-year Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science program, students will gain admission into the two-year Graduate Diploma of Dentistry program.
This program involves development of the theoretical knowledge underpinning dental practice together with extensive clinical work in the Griffith Dental Clinic and on placements in the community.
The Graduate Diploma of Dentistry is a full-fee paying program.
Attendance
This degree program is only offered on a full-time basis. It is delivered on-campus and students are expected to attend all activities scheduled including compulsory supervised workplace experience. Supervised workplace experience may be undertaken in private dental practices, Queensland Health facilities and other organisations.
Professional recognition
Completion of both the Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science (or equivalent) and the Graduate Diploma of Dentistry from Griffith University entitles students to register with the Dental Board of Queensland (and other Dental Boards throughout Australia) as a Dentist.
Career opportunities
Registered Dentists can work in private practice or in the public sector. The majority of dentists are self-employed in general dental practice. Some are employed in the State Dental Services providing dental care to children, indigenous and geographically and/or financially disadvantaged communities. There are also opportunities for graduates to become academics undertaking teaching and research in the University sector while others choose to undertake further training in order to become specialists in areas such as Orthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry or Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.
