Key Features:
The aim of the course is to enhance the qualifications of practicing translators who are accredited at professional level by NAATI or have had training in translation equivalent to this level (see admission requirements), by teaching them research and practical skills involved in translating highly sophisticated, specialised texts. The course will thus prepare students to take the NAATI advanced translator exam and gain accreditation at that level.

Requirements - 2009 :
Entry Requirements: Bachelor degree with NAATI professional accreditation in Translating, or completion of Postgraduate Diploma or Master of Translation and Interpreting with the grade of Credit or above in TRAN 820.

English Language Requirements:
  • IELTS of 7.0 overall with 6.0 in Listening and Speaking, and 7.0 in Reading and in Writing
  • TOEFL (Paper based test): Score of 600 overall, with 6.0 TWE, 53 Listening, 56 Reading, 61 Structure/ Written Expression
  • TOEFL (Computer based test): 250 overall, with 19 Listening, 22 Reading, 26 Structure/ Writing
  • TOEFL (Internet based test): Score of 100 overall, with 18 Listening, 22 Reading, 24 Writing, 23 Speaking
Students who do not meet these requirements can complete the Translation and Interpreting Preparatory Program (TIPP) taught in the National Centre for English Language Training and Research (NCELTR) at Macquarie University.

Regarding course duration, the course can be completed in one year of full-time study if students already have NAATI accreditation, other relevant qualifications or have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Translating and Interpreting at Macquarie University (with a grade of Credit or higher for TRAN820).

Applicants who do not hold such accreditation/qualifications will need to enrol in the Postgraduate Diploma in Translating and Interpreting. Successful completion (with a grade of Credit or higher for TRAN820) will qualify students for entry into the Master of Advanced Translation program. Thus, students who complete the course in this manner will study full-time for two years.
