Why choose this program?
The oceans are humanity's last frontier to explore, exploit and manage. Issues such as global climate change, food production and waste management are intimately linked with the marine environment. Tackling these complex issues requires graduates who are equipped with a multi-disciplinary foundation in the life and physical sciences, as well as resource management skills. This program provides training in biology, coastal physical sciences and coastal management through a wide range of core and elective courses. You will also be offered placement opportunities in the marine industry to equip you with hands-on experience in topics such as fisheries, conservation, and management. The excellent environmental setting of the city of Gold Coast, situated in the most rapidly developing region of Australia, provides ideal learning opportunities for this program.
An integral component of the program is a Marine Industry Placement that will expose you to professional activities in fisheries, aquaculture, marine conservation, coastal management and/or coastal engineering. Griffith University has close links with local and state government agencies, as well as the commercial sector, that will provide support for this placement program.
Bachelor of Marine Science students will study biology, coastal physical sciences and coastal management across a range of core and elective courses.
The Bachelor of Marine Science offers the following specialised areas of study:
- Coastal Physical Science
- Coastal Resources Management
- Marine Chemical Sciences
- Marine Ecology.
Attendance
The Bachelor of Marine Science is offered as full time standard semesters, in an on-campus mode. All students will complete an Industrial Affiliates Program course in Year 3. The 20CP Industrial Affiliates Program will include 2 days per week for 13 weeks undertaking an industry based project in an industry setting.
Career opportunities
Career paths for graduates include opportunities in coastal resource management (e.g. fisheries, conservation, pollution control) and coastal physical science (e.g. modelling, meteorology) in both public and private (e.g. consulting) organisations.
Bachelor of Marine Science graduates will have developed graduate outcomes that are consistent with the desired attributes of the 'Griffith Graduate' in developing oral and written communication skills, information literacy, cultural sensitivity, intellectual flexibility, the ability to work as effective team members and the ability to behave ethically in social, professional and work environments.
