Why choose this program?

Biotechnology is one of the world's fastest developing industries. Griffith's Bachelor of Biotechnology has well-established links with local biotechnology industries that provide specialised input into the program. Biotechnology is a priority area within the Queensland Government's 'Smart State' strategy and you'll be well placed to take advantage of opportunities in this expanding industry.

The program will give you knowledge and skills in the science and business of biotechnology. Your scientific studies are integrated with a study of the management, marketing, regulatory affairs and intellectual property issues associated with bioindustry. Practical laboratory sessions therefore develop your expertise in molecular biotechnology as well as product and process development. You will graduate ready to apply new knowledge in the biosciences to innovation in the biotechnology industries.

Biotechnology can be used to alter growth patterns in a plant culture, depending on differing nutrient growth protocols; for example, at top left is a control sample, top right, shoot induction; bottom left, root induction; bottom right, callus induction.

Attendance

The Bachelor of Biotechnology is offered full-time on campus at the Nathan campus. You may choose to study courses at other campuses if or where the program structure allows.

As a full-time student you will generally attend 12-26 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week.

Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part-time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per semester. This may affect entitlement to Centrelink benefits. International students must maintain a full-time study load.

Some courses may be offered in intensive mode only. This will require attendance for a full week(s) or weekend and these courses may be held in the breaks between semester or during mid-semester breaks.

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible to join Ausbiotech Ltd, Australian Biotechnology Association, Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Australian Society for Microbiology.

Career opportunities

Biotechnologists often work in laboratories in process development, process control and method development, or follow careers in research and development, medical diagnostics, therapeutics, pharmaceuticals, agribusiness, food processing and manufacturing. Opportunities can also be found in government policy development, regulatory monitoring, patent protection, public health and research.

You may also choose to undertake a fourth-year research honours degree, which can lead to a PhD and to an international career as a professional research biotechnologist.

Study pathways

Diploma of Biosciences

Graduates of the Diploma of Biosciences program (undertaken at both QIBT and Griffith) may articulate to the second year of the Bachelor of Biotechnology program at Nathan with 80 credit points of credit.
