The Graduate Diploma in Education provides a professional qualification for secondary teaching in selected subject areas. The program includes an academic strand comprising units in Education, and a professional strand comprising units in curriculum, methodology and supervised school experience. The school experience component includes at least 50 days of supervised practicum in a school setting, with a designated classroom teacher as mentor.

The Bachelor degree must contain a major in one of these subject areas.

Requirements - 2009 :
Entry Requirements: The Graduate Diploma in Education is open to graduates holding a recognised Bachelor degree with a major in at least one teaching subject available in Macquarie's pre-service teacher education program.

English Language Requirements:
  • IELTS of 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each section
  • TOEFL (Paper based test): Score of 600 overall, 5.5 TWE and the following scores for each section: 55 Listening, 54 Reading, 61 Writing
  • TOEFL (Computer based test): 250 overall, 5.5 Essay Rating, and the following scores for each section: 21 Listening, 21 Reading, 26 Writing.
  • TOEFL (Internet based test): Score of 100 overall, with 21 Listening, 20 Reading, 24 Writing, 24 Speaking

Students who do not meet the English entry requirements above are advised to include an English Language Course prior to commencing full time study.

Notes: The program offers secondary curriculum units in the following subject areas: English, Economic and Business Studies, Geography, History, Languages, Mathematics, Science, Drama (minor only), English as a Second Language (minor only), Legal Studies (minor only), Society and Culture (minor only), Information and Communication Technologies (minor only).

Students must complete two curriculum units in at least one of the subject areas from English to Science. This is their first teaching subject. Most will complete at least one curriculum unit in a second subject, and in the case of English, Geography and History this is expected.

Macquarie University requires that the first teaching subject must have been studied for at least three years at university, and the second teaching subject for at least two years.

Students complete the program in one year of full-time study commencing in late January.
