Why choose this program? You will develop the skills and knowledge required for your first five years of employment as a commercial pilot. The program is designed to provide you with the core skills needed for lifelong learning in the constantly changing aviation environment. You can study second- and third-year courses via the Internet. In your third year you will have the opportunity to undertake a short research project, which can be sponsored by an organisation or individual within the industry. Year 1, you will complete the General Flying Progress Test (GFPT) and flight training with an approved flight-training provider; and begin the prescribed program of study that introduces the sciences underpinning the theory and practice of aviation. Year 2, you will complete your Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) theory and instrument theory. Your studies will concentrate on the specific aviation topics necessary for professional competence. Year 3, you will undertake the theory component of your Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) and a Multi-Engine Command Instrument Rating or Instructor Rating to complete your aviation training. Griffith University aviation students will be well placed for careers as commercial pilots with a combined qualification program. Attendance The first year of the Bachelor of Aviation is offered full time on campus at the Nathan Campus. As a full time student you will generally attend 15 - 20 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week. Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per semester. This may affect entitlement to Centrelink benefits. International students must maintain a full time study load. The second and third years of the Bachelor of Aviation are also offered in external mode and via the Internet - fully on line, which means that there is no requirement for on campus attendance. For a number of courses you will be provided course materials via a variety of means, including printed materials and via Learning@Griffith. The remaining courses offered fully on line will allow you to participate in learning activities, lodge assessment items and access support services via Learning@Griffith. Access to a reliable computer with internet connection is essential. The Bachelor of Aviation includes some core and optional courses which may be scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 9:00 - 4:00pm and it is expected that if you enrol in these courses as an on campus student you will be available to attend. Professional recognition As a graduate of this course, you will receive a Commercial Pilot Licence. Career opportunities You will be prepared for employment in the field of general aviation, which includes charter work, flight instruction (theory and practical) and other aerial services, such as agricultural spraying, aerial surveying and photography. Recent graduates have been employed as flying instructors, first officers with regional airlines and in the Australian Defence Forces. You will also be able to apply your skills to many areas of the aviation industry such as management, research and human resource management, and government organisations, such as the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
