The Diploma in Japanese is designed for people who want knowledge and skills in Japanese language, culture and business etiquette. It is a vocational programme, enabling students to become competent communicators in Japanese, particularly in terms of oral fl uency, for social and business needs. This is achieved through intensive academic language study and practical application of language, the development of sound cultural awareness, specialist language skills and knowledge of business and hospitality etiquette. It is ideal for those who want to focus on intensive language study, including graduates who want to add a language to their existing qualification. The Diploma consists of papers from the first two years of the Bachelor of Arts (Japanese) programme as well as papers in Japanese Culture, Japanese for Hospitality and Business. It is possible to cross-credit from this Diploma to the Bachelor of Arts (Japanese). Applicants are encouraged to discuss this possibility with the programme leader. Late applications will be accepted if the programme is not full. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - NCEA: A minimum of 48 credits at Level 2 (or higher) over 4 subjects, with a minimum of 12 credits in each subject, including a language other than English. Four credits at Level 2 (or higher) in Reading; 4 credits at Level 2 (or higher) in Writing (or Sixth Form Certificate with 18 or less over four subjects, including a language other than English). Completion of Year 13 is recommended
- It is preferable that applicants have studied Japanese, Māori or a foreign language. Applicants with limited or no prior knowledge of Japanese will be required to attend an intensive course prior to enrolment or take 2.5 years to complete the Diploma.
- Applicants with prior knowledge of Japanese, either from study at another institution or from working in Japan, are encouraged to apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL). Credit may be given for prior knowledge, which will enable applicants to enter at a higher level in the programme.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE
Year One develops a sound base of linguistic competence and written communication, together with an understanding of social and cultural aspects of Japan. Students learn to use different levels of language and how to deal with people in different situations. They also become proficient in word processing and the use of graphics using Japanese computer software. Year Two extends linguistic competence through increasingly complex language structures and specialist usage. Students also gain skills for independent research, which is written up and presented in Japanese. Students specialise in Japanese social and business etiquette, and language for hospitality and business. Students who begin their programme of study with the paper Japanese 1A may take five semesters (2.5 years) to complete the diploma. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES - Translating
