AUT University’s English Studies degree is the most contemporary in New Zealand. English Studies graduates will have many skills, including the ability to compose written, spoken and multimedia texts to a sophisticated level for a variety of different purposes. The major is made up of two complementary areas of focus. First, the use of language as both an object of study and a vehicle for various purposes (e.g. language and communication and modern rhetoric). The second area concentrates on literature and culture (including both regional and broader English literature/s). There are, in addition, electives in a variety of areas, including creative writing. Late applications will be accepted if the programme is not full. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Note: Entrance to university does not guarantee admission to a specific programme of study. SPECIAL ADMISSION Applicants over 20 years of age who do not hold a university entrance qualification (such as NCEA or CIE above) may qualify for university entrance via Special Admission. ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. Graduates will attain high-level technical expertise in, and working knowledge of, the English language and the genres and media used to communicate in English, as well as an appreciation of its cultural and literary aspects. You will acquire the skills to analyse English from the various disciplinary perspectives of linguistics, media, literary and cultural studies. This will enable you to identify key written, spoken and visual genres in English and interpret their features and underlying ideologies. Your ability to produce written, spoken and visual language in a variety of media will also be developed to a high level. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES A Bachelor of Arts in English Studies will be especially useful for media, advertising, marketing, public relations, trade, tourism, diplomacy as well as teaching English and work in the creative industries. There are career-focused pathways within the degree, including a variety of minors in areas such as multimedia, public relations, advertising, and creative writing, some of which allow you to gain industry-standard certificates while studying for your major (such as the minors in Teaching English to Speakers of a Second Language and Translation and Interpreting studies). Students can undertake double-majors in a variety of other arts subjects or a conjoint with the Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences (subject to approval).
