Chinese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. New Zealand needs people who have knowledge and skills in Chinese language, culture and business etiquette to develop and build cultural and commercial links with Chinese speaking countries. The Bachelor of Arts in Chinese combines intensive Chinese language learning with core studies papers that equip graduates with skills in communication, technology and research. Programme Code: AK3704 Level: 7 Points: 360 Duration: Three years full time / Equivalent part time Venue: City Campus Starting date: 3 March 2008 Application deadline: 16 November 2007 AUT encourages early application. Late applications will be accepted if the programme is not full. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Note: Entrance to university does not guarantee admission to a specific programme of study. SPECIAL ADMISSION Applicants over 20 years of age who do not hold a university entrance qualification (such as NCEA or CIE above) may qualify for university entrance via Special Admission. ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. Graduates will achieve a high level of oral fl uency in Chinese as well as competency in reading, writing and listening skills. This will enable them to communicate confidently and effectively in Chinese, and to translate and interpret everyday Chinese with confidence. They will have a sound knowledge of Chinese society, culture and business etiquette and will be able to interact appropriately with Chinese nationals in a variety of situations including the workplace. Key capabilities developed in the core papers such as communication skills, group work, problem solving and research are an integral part of the learning process in the Chinese papers. Graduates will also be able to use a variety of computer skills including Chinese software and multimedia. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Bachelor of Arts in Chinese prepares students for careers in service industries such as tourism and hospitality, banking and finance, import and export, diplomacy, Chinese language teaching and many other professions where proficiency in Chinese language and culture is required.
