The Bachelor of Sport and Recreation is a leading industry driven programme designed to address the increasing demand for skilled sport, recreation, health and fitness professionals, both in New Zealand and the global arena. The degree offers five majors – exercise science, management, coaching, physical activity and nutrition, and outdoor education. Each equips students with world-class skills, enabling them to make a valuable and rewarding contribution to the sport and recreation industries: In most cases, students can combine two areas to complete the degree with a double major. Spa and massage papers are offered as electives. Students who wish to become physical education teachers in secondary schools study the Bachelor of Sport and Recreation followed by the one-year Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching. Third year students gain industry experience through an internship. These co-operative education papers involve a year long work experience programme run in conjunction with a wide range of sport and recreation organisations. Recent student placements have included national and regional sports trusts, local councils, sport and fitness facilities, event companies, outdoor recreation and community organisations, government agencies and secondary schools. SPECIAL ADMISSION Applicants over 20 years of age who do not hold a university entrance qualification (such as NCEA or CIE) may qualify for university entrance via Special Admission. ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. MAJORS Exercise Science: Students study sport and exercise in relation to improving fitness and performance. The focus is on understanding the physiological and mechanical factors that affect human performance, and physical conditioning and how to design and assess training programmes to influence and maximise fitness and/or performance. Management: This major will appeal to students interested in the business side of sport and recreation. Students will develop a range of marketing and management skills which can be applied to sport and recreation programmes, events, facilities or organisations. Coaching: Gain the skills and knowledge to become a world class coach. From effective coaching programmes for children through to coaching talented athletes and elite level performers, this major prepares you for the challenges of a professional coaching career in sport, recreation and physical education. Physical Activity and Nutrition: Students study lifestyle management and healthy living in the general population. This major addresses issues such as the prevention of life-style related diseases and public health approaches to the promotion of physical activity. Students will gain the practical and theoretical skills to help a society facing burgeoning obesity and inactivity. Outdoor Education: Students apply the underlying theory and principles of outdoor education to practice. The focus is on learning to facilitate personal growth through participation in outdoor activities.
