The purpose of this one semester programme is to prepare students: 1) For degree level study. Students who gain a B average are eligible to apply for degree programmes. Other students can continue their studies by enrolling in the Certificate in Health Studies. On successful completion of this certificate (eight papers) students are eligible to apply for a degree programme. Students over 20 years may only need to complete one or two papers to demonstrate the ability to achieve at this level of study (inquiries to Debra Spinetto 09 921 9735) 2) To work in health care support roles under the supervision of health professionals. For example by enrolling in the: Dental Surgery Assisting Pathway Students choosing this pathway will develop the skills needed to work as a competent Dental Assistant in private practice with dentists and hygienists or in school dental clinics with Dental Therapists. Students will develop clinical skills required to assist patients before, during and after treatment including producing x-rays, and sterilization procedures, Students also gain communication skills and an understanding of the responsibilities involved in the running of a dental office such as scheduling appointments, billing, and ordering materials. Practical experience is gained in the specially designed simulation laboratory and the new twelve-chair Dental Clinic at the AUT North Shore Campus, as well as placements in dental clinics in the public sector. ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test.
