The Bachelor of Visual Arts is an academic and professional qualification in visual arts that incorporates a range of disciplines and builds expertise in a series of art related contexts. Students develop their practical art knowledge and their ability to work with concepts, while developing skills in analysing and critically evaluating art. The programme focuses on how to generate and develop art ideas, how to work with visual language, and learning about theoretical and historical contexts related to art.

SPECIAL ADMISSION

Applicants over 20 years of age who do not hold a university entrance qualification (such as NCEA or CIE above) may qualify for university entrance via Special Admission.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. 

 

THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE

The programme emphasises the development of each individual’s artistic interests, and their approach to art making. Students are able to specialise in painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture.

 

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Successful completion of this qualification will give students the knowledge, skills and professional aptitude to work as practising artists, arts administrators, curators, art historians, art critics, photographers, art writers or art teachers.

 

FURTHER STUDIES

At the end of the three year programme, students may opt for a fourth year in Bachelor of Art and Design (Honours). This involves a one year intensive postgraduate programme of specialisation in their chosen field. Students may also undertake postgraduate study in the two year Master of Art and Design.
