This degree offers a firm grounding in the fundamental skills leading to a career in the creative industries. It provides a number of pathways in six specialist fields (majors)

  • Fashion
  • Graphic Design
  • Spatial Design
  • Digital Design
  • Product Design
  • Textiles for Fashion

The programme runs for three years with increasing specialisation in each major. The Year One programme covers core studies in Design Studio and Theory, as well as a range of elective programmes that introduce the majors in textiles for fashion, graphic design, spatial design, digital design and product design.

Year Two builds on the conceptual bases of Year One with students following their major pathway. Students develop specific technical knowledge and skills in a context of understanding design processes and theories.

In Year Three students specialise further in their major, developing specific research based projects in a year of focused and intensive enquiry. The programme is structured to emphasise creative development in the early stages and then to bring this creativity into a more professional context as the programme continues.

Spatial Design involves the study and research of relationships between people and their environments to enable the design and manipulation of spaces that respond in a progressive manner to the nature of these relationships. The Bachelor of Design in Spatial Design focuses on emerging spatial practices operating at the intersection of architecture, art and visual technology. The course centres on developing interventions within the space of the city and offers an active engagement with other professionals, practitioners, groups and communities.

THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE

Building Design, Interior Architecture and Furniture Design will give you the skills to design material and physical spaces and to explore their strategic and productive expressions in the environment. Performance Design, Scenographic and Temporal Environments explores temporary and immaterial spaces that are performative and experiential in nature. Digital and Virtual Environments will develop your skills in the shaping and interrogation of space and time using the computer as a design tool of representation and analysis.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Successful completion of this qualification will give you the knowledge, skills and professional aptitude to work in interior design, interior architecture, furniture, exhibition, events design, or design for theatre, film, television or digital environments.

PAPERS

In addition to the core papers of Year One, students are introduced to a broad range of approaches to spatial design emphasising contemporary design practices, visual communication skills and basic approaches to computer aided modeling. Theoretical studies in historical and critical approaches to design thinking are closely related to studio-based projects.
