Te Kōkī the New Zealand School of Music

The establishment of Te Kōkī the New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) is the beginning of an exciting new era for tertiary music study in New Zealand. We hope you will join us on this journey.

Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington have combined the strengths of their Conservatorium of Music and School of Music to offer students opportunities for comprehensive study unique in this country. This partnership combines more than 60 years' experience in the fields of performance, composition, and historical research.

The New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) offers opportunities unparalleled in New Zealand. Staff include members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) and New Zealand String Quartet, and students have the opportunity to play with the Wellington Youth Orchestra and Vector Wellington Orchestra. The NZSM is New Zealand's centre for musical composition, and hosts resident and visiting composers at weekly composer workshops. Facilities include a fine collection of historical instruments, several world-class concert rooms, and four well-equipped electroacoustic music studios.

Te Kōkī represents the Dawn Chorus, and we are confident that you will find something to inspire you and awaken your talents.

The Bachelor of Music

Music is as old as humanity itself. Whether you’re listening to the historic notes of baroque instruments, jazz combos, symphony orchestras, opera or the beats of contemporary electronica, music reaches out and connects us to our past, to other cultures, and to each other.

The Bachelor of Music (BMus) programme offers rigorous technical training in both jazz and classical performance, an inspirational composition environment, and a strong grounding in the academic study of music. Working with staff members who include many of New Zealand’s leading professional musicians, students can develop their musical talents to the highest level.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Music degree can go on to postgraduate study in NZSM’s Honours, Master's, Diploma and PhD programmes. A BMus can lead to a career as a professional musician or singer, composer, teacher of music, music therapist or a wide range of careers in music, broadcasting, the recording industry, the media, and arts management.

Students choose one of four majors*: Classical Performance; Composition (Instrumental and Vocal, or Sonic Arts); Jazz (Performance, or Composition and Arranging) or the BMus Music Studies, which has streams in Ethnomusicology, Musicology and Jazz. Composition majors are encouraged to write pieces that can be performed at the School, and compete in the annual composers’ competition. Classical Performance majors can receive tuition in all the standard orchestral instruments, voice, piano, guitar, recorder, Baroque violin, Baroque cello, Baroque flute, organ, harpsichord and fortepiano. Jazz majors can receive instruction in all standard jazz instruments including voice. Regular masterclasses and workshops are given by leading international artists who visit New Zealand. Majors in Music Studies receive broadly based music training, including historical, critical and creative papers. Ethnomusicology, Musicology and Jazz specialisations within that major benefit from the internationally recognised expertise the NZSM offers.

Study for the BMus in Classical Performance, Composition (Instrumental and Vocal, and Sonic Arts) and Jazz (Performance and Composition and Arranging) is intensive and allows relatively little room for non-Music subjects. If you want a more broadly based degree, the BA in Music Studies is more suitable. For students who enjoy being extended, it is possible to take a double degree combining a BMus and a BA.

A BMus at NZSM

A Bachelor of Music degree requires three years of full-time study. To enrol in a BMus you need a university entrance qualification. See the Course Catalogue to find out the points value of courses.

Places in the first-year Classical Performance and Jazz majors are by audition. Classical instrumentalists should have reached the equivalent of Grade 8 in Associated Board exams before auditioning; classical singers should have a good background in musicianship. Jazz students should show technical and musical competence in a jazz style on their instrument or voice. Audition application forms, available from the NZSM, must be returned by the dates indicated below. For all BMus programmes, a good background in music theory (the equivalent of Grade 7 theory) is recommended. A summer bridging course, NZSM 160, is available for students without the necessary background.
