Why choose this program?

Studying language with Griffith is the next best thing to learning in the country of origin. Language teaching is a highly specialised field and Griffith not only has some of the best teachers in Australia but also the best facilities. Small classes allow you to get individual attention, so whether you are a raw beginner learning to say ‘Buongiorno’ or ‘Selamat Pagi’, or whether you are quite fluent, you will find courses to suit.

You can specialise in one or more of the following languages:

  • Chinese
  • Indonesian
  • International English*
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Spanish

[*] For students with a non-English-speaking background only.

Through the University of Queensland you can also specialise in the following languages:

  • French
  • German

Learning a language means you will learn linguistics - the science, nature and function of language and how it is used in society. You will learn how to apply knowledge of linguistics and your chosen language/s to real world challenges including the following:

  • second language learning and teaching
  • language and the media
  • language and gender
  • language and information technology
  • intercultural communication
  • translating and interpreting

No study of language is complete without an understanding of the culture of that language. This degree exposes you to the cultural context of your chosen language with an option to pursue an in-depth study of that culture if you desire. The degree also provides the opportunity to study international business or a teaching area (should you wish to pursue a teaching qualification upon graduation) and as such is one of only a few degrees enabling you to combine the study of language, linguistics and international business.

Attendance

The Bachelor of Arts in Languages and Applied Linguistics is offered full-time on campus at the Nathan campus. You may choose to study courses at other campuses if or where the program structure allows.

As a full-time student you will generally attend 15-20 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week.

Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part-time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per semester. This may affect entitlement to Centrelink benefits. International students must maintain a full-time study load.

Career opportunities

Your high-level language and cultural skills, together with your knowledge of linguistics and applied linguistics, will enable you to take advantage of excellent employment opportunities throughout the world including the following:

  • education and teaching
  • translation and interpreting
  • travel, tourism and hospitality
  • publishing and journalism
  • sales and marketing
  • advertising and public relations
  • international business and relations
