Bachelor of Arts (International Relations) If you want to know more about global affairs and Australia’s place in the world, then this program will enable you to develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the practice and theory of contemporary international relations. The program covers the nature and character of the modern international system, the issues on the policy agendas of the international community and the factors and forces that shape contemporary international affairs. You will better understand why countries make certain economic or political decisions and how they affect others, the need for global security and the politics which shape the future of our neighbours. Overseas exchange Griffith’s student exchange program provides you with the opportunity to live and study in the country of your chosen language. As a student of International Relations, you may be selected to participate in an exchange with a university in Japan, Indonesia, China, Korea or Vietnam. Griffith University also provides generous scholarships to help and encourage students to undertake these exchange programs. Program structure In Year 1, you will be introduced to international relations, globalisation, economics, cultures and civilisations, communication skills and optional introductory language studies. In Years 2 and 3, you will complete the courses for the International Relations major and supplement your studies with a choice from the following: - an overseas internship or exchange
- an additional area of specialised study offered by the Business school
- a specialisation offered from other areas of the University
Attendance The Bachelor of Arts (Politics, Asian Studies and International Relations) is offered full-time on campus at the Gold Coast campus (International Relations Major only) or at Nathan campus. Students may choose to study courses at other campuses if or where the program structure allows. As a full-time student you will generally attend 12-15 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week. Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part-time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per semester. International students must maintain a full-time study load. Summer semester is the period between the end of Semester Two and the beginning of Semester One of the following year (November-February). The summer semester courses are delivered in intensive blocks (less than the normal 13-week semester). These courses are held over a four week period between late November and Christmas each year and is the equivalent of a 10CP course. Please check the Course Catalogue for the availability of any suitable summer courses. During summer semester, a student will generally attend 16 hours of scheduled classes per course per week for four weeks. The Bachelor of Arts (Politics, Asian Studies and International Relations) may include some courses which may be scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 9.00 am and 5.00 pm, and it is expected that if you enrol in these courses you will be available to attend. In Year 3 students enrolled in the Politics and Public Policy Major students must undertake a placement in an organisation relevant to politics and public policy; this will take place in Semester 1 (3101PPP Political Practice) . You are required to undertake an unpaid internships which requires full-time or part-time attendance on multiple occasions. Students may secure placements outside the Brisbane metropolitan area, Gold Coast area, interstate or overseas.
