Four areas of study: Early Years (emphasising birth to eight years, and preparing graduates to teach prep-year 3); Primary: P-7 - internal only (emphasising years Prep - 7); Middle Years (emphasising years 4-9); Senior Years (emphasising years 10-12 as well as lower Secondary). Midyear intake The mid year intake for Early Years, Middle Years, and Senior Years is for full time, internal mode only. Mid year intake for Primary: P-7 to be advised.
Further, Senior Years will have limited teaching areas (ie. Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Arts, Film and Media Education and Language Education will not be offered mid year). Refer to the teaching area entry requirements for further information. Entry Requirements Completion of a Bachelor's degree, which required a minimum of three years of study, that does not lead to teacher registration.
Senior Years also requires successful completion of the equivalent of 96 credit points (one year of full time study) in undergraduate discipline studies that relate to the nominated Teaching Area. Refer to the teaching area entry requirements for additional information.
The Middle Years Study Area requires applicants to nominate two discipline strengths based on previous study.
For Early Years and Primary: P-7 it is assumed that the undergraduate degree has sufficient breadth to enable you to confidently address the range of teaching areas that is expected by a potential employer. You may wish to refer to the Queensland Studies Authority website, eg Years 1-10 Key Learning Areas.
IELTS: International applicants and applicants with English as a second language must provide evidence of English language competence achieving an overall band score of 7.0 and no less than 7.0 in each sub band. The cost of the testing will be met by the applicant. English test results must be no more than two years old.
NOTE: The majority of supervised field experience must occur in Australian Primary and/or Secondary school settings. Additional Entry Requirements - Senior and Middle Years Senior Years applicants are required to nominate a proposed teaching area based on prior studies. Middle years applicants are required nominate two discipline strengths based on previous study. Teaching area nominations and discipline strength nominations are made via the onlineTeaching Area Nomination Form. Professional Recognition The Graduate Diploma in Education is recognised by the Queensland College of Teachers as meeting the requirements for registration as a teacher in Queensland. Applicants for teacher registration in Queensland are subject to national criminal history checks. Working With Children Check Working With Children Check - As required by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act (2000), student teachers must undergo a criminal history check and be issued with a Suitability Card (Blue Card) by the Commission.
As soon as you enter your enrolment program for the course, you must submit your Blue Card application to the QUT Student Centre immediately. You must hold aBlue Cardto undertake activities in any unit which involves contact with children, including the required field studies blocks.
If you do not apply for aBlue Card. immediately upon enrolment in the course and allow sufficient time for the police check and issuing of the Card, you will be unable to participate in the required activities and may need to be withdrawn from the unit(s) and incur both financial and academic penalty. It may take up to 12 weeks for the Commission to issue the Card. The application form is available atbluecard.qut.com. Deferment QUT'sdefermentpolicy does not apply to this course. Graduate School Program The Graduate School Program enables students to gain early experience in schools before their formal field experience commences. The program is strongly recommended for commencing full-time internal students and it is essential that you have a valid blue card in order to participate. The program is subject to viable numbers. For more details, refer to your program coordinator. Computing Requirement The increased and more creative use of online teaching technology in this degree requires that you have access to suitable computer facilities with a minimum equivalent of a Pentium 3 processor, 56k modem and internet access.
