Program Description The program is tailored according to the background and requirements of the individual student. In most cases it would include advanced formal undergraduate training, including lectures in general and medical Biochemistry, training in the use of modern biochemical techniques, e.g. scintillation counting, gas liquid chromatography (GLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), molecular biology, spectrophotometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and animal and plant cell culture. Students also carry out a research project (or projects) in the laboratory of an academic member of staff and write a report on the project.
The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences has a wide range of interests and can offer research projects in most areas of Biochemistry. Specialised areas of research are Molecular Biology, Marine Biochemistry, Parasite Biochemistry and Plant Biochemistry.
