It provides a pathway to the Master of Sports Coaching for candidates who do not qualify for direct entry. Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Sports Coaching will allow students to enrol in the Master of Sports Coaching [55086]. Its primary purpose is to prepare students for further postgraduate studies. Students will graduate with a foundation level of knowledge and be equipped to handle the more advanced studies encountered in the Masters program. The challenge of producing excellence in sport is now well recognised as requiring highly skilled and qualified coaches who can successfully blend science and practice. Additionally, coaches require skills in leadership and management to coordinate a large and complex group of people who contribute to the development of athletes and teams. The program involves a multidisciplinary partnership with the School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science (PES), the School of Education and Professional Studies (EPS, Gold Coast) and the Griffith Business School (GBS). PES will deliver courses related to the scientific aspects of sports coaching, whilst EPS, Gold Coast and the Department of Tourism, Leisure, Hotel and Sport Management (HSL) will offer courses focusing on the development of relevant leadership and management skills respectively. The Graduate Certificate in Sports Coaching offers both entry and exit points. Attendance The Graduate Certificate in Sports Coaching is offered in Internet mode (i.e. fully online), part-time only in 2009 or part-time or full-time from 2010. High speed internet access is the minimum required technology. You can access course materials, participate in discussion forums, lodge assessment items and access support services via Learning at Griffith8. There is no requirement for on-campus attendance. Access to a reliable computer with Internet connection is essential. International students residing outside Australia may enrol in this program. Career opportunities The skills developed in this program are transferable and can be applied to a wide range of careers. Graduating students will be able to use their skills and knowledge to enhance their employment opportunities as a high performance coach, director of coaching or sports development manager in their chosen sport both nationally and internationally. Other graduates may choose to become coach educators within their governing body.
