The Bachelor of Security Analysis (Asia-Pacific) degree provides for intensive foundation training in security analysis, significant language training in an Asian language and a flexible elective component that allows students to take further language courses or a major in another discipline relevant to their academic and vocational goals.

Normal completion time for the degree is three years. The structure features: ten courses [60 units] on security and contemporary affairs (including core units in Strategic Studies); an Asian language sequence (four courses)[24 units]; thereafter, students are free to take unprescribed elective courses (10 courses) [60 units], which may include a further major in a relevant disciplinary area, from outside the Faculty of Asian Studies.

Program Requirements

The Bachelor of Security Analysis (Asia-Pacific) requires completion of 144 units (24 courses) including:

a.Core component: Ten courses (60 units) giving a foundation in security analysis, from approved courses offered in the Faculty of Asian Studies and the Faculty of Arts;
b.Asian language component: An Asian language sequence comprising four courses (24 units) in an Asian language offered by the Faculty;
c.Elective component: Ten courses (60 units) – unprescribed. This allows a student the option to take a relevant major in another Faculty. It also allows the taking of further language courses. To meet honours entry requirements, Honours candidates will need to select additional Asian language courses from this elective area, to secure an Asian language major.

Foundation in Security Analysis

The foundation in security analysis comprises ten courses (60 units) in all, comprising:
a.First-year. Students normally take two first-year disciplinary courses ‘Individual and Society in Asia and the Pacific A’ and ‘Individual and Society in Asia and the Pacific B’.
b.Second / Later Year Courses. There are a further eight courses (48 units).

(1)Two of these courses will be Security and Strategic Studies A and Security and Strategic Studies B;
(2)A further six will come from courses grouped to reflect focused regional themes. Students might consider courses from the following indicative list, when offered:

The demand by employers for Asian Studies graduates is keen and ever increasing. Graduates who have undertaken a degree program in security analysis are especially well-placed to benefit from career opportunities which open up as Australia's relations with the nations of Asia develop. Corporations, governments, aid agencies and other major institutions are becoming keenly aware of ther need for a combination of high-quality security analysis and in-depth understanding of the Asia region. Major corporations and arms of government have looked to ANU graduates for expertise on regional issues for many years. Asian Studies graduates of the ANU are finding employment in areas such as the media, marketing, international trade, banking and finance, the tourist industry, and federal and state government departments with policy interests in Asia. This degree provides graduates with training in security and risk analysis that will open up employment opportunities in the business sector as well as government.

Faculty graduates have been employed by a wide range of organisations such as major national and international consulting firms, Non-Government Organisations (including aid, humanitarian and human rights agencies), the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Boral Asia, Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade, the Department of Defence, Cathay Pacific, Coopers & Lybrand, Deacons Graham & James, Hyundai Corporation, Japan External Trade Organisation, KPMG, Price Waterhouse and the World Bank.
