Aim

The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to increase their breadth and depth of knowledge and application of skills in the area of water resources management. The wide variety of specialised coursework electives and study options enable students to create a program of study that meets their individual needs. Study options include further coursework, a research project or an industry project. The industry project has been designed to assist students in becoming professionally aware through quality interaction with industry leaders.

 

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have completed one of the following qualifications:

  • Graduate Diploma in Water Resources Management
  • 4 year undergraduate degree including honours in a recommended field* (Australian or equivalent);
  • 4 year undergraduate degree in a recommended field (Australian or equivalent) with relevant experience**;
  • 3 year undergraduate degree plus honours in a recommended field* (Australian or equivalent)

*Engineering and Science are considered as recommended fields.
** Relevant experience will need to be demonstrated to an appropriate level and will be assessed at the discretion of the Program Director.

*** Professionals with extensive experience working in the water industry who do not meet the academic requirements may be eligible for entry to the Graduate Certificate.

It is assumed that all applicants will have a demonstrated background in mathematics (i.e. at least equivalent to year 12 mathematics (e.g. Mathematical Studies in South Australia). Course prerequisites indicate where a higher level of mathematical ability is required.

 

In addition, International applicants who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): with a minimum overall score of 6.5 with sub-test scores no less than 6.0 or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
  • Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or
  • Successful completion of two or more years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which:
    • English is an official language; or
    • English is commonly used, as determined by the University.

Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of two or more years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the Program Director.

 

Content/structure

To be eligible for the degree students are required to complete a total of 54 units of study. Students are required to undertake the core courses (18 units) and coursework elective courses (18 units). Of the remaining 18 units of study, students are able to choose from the following study options:

Study Option 1- Coursework courses (18 units).
Study Option 2 -Coursework courses ( 9 units) and Minor project ( 9 units).
Study Option 3- Research minor thesis (18 units) (made up of Project 1 and 2).
Study Option 4- Industry project (18 units).

 

Fee information

Fees for International students: $AU 23,000 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Rules

  1. This is a full fee paying program.
  2. Students must complete at least 50% of their studies at their home institution.
  3. Students who undertake study option 3 or 4 are required to complete a Engineering Research Methods ENGG 5006 OR Engineering Research Practice EEET 5004 course as part of their elective course requirement prior to the commencement of Hydrology Water Resources Projects 1 & 2 CIVE 5050/CIVE 5051 or Industry Based Project WRM CIVE 5064. This course will require students to develop a project proposal. This proposal will form the basis of the proposal required to be approved by the Program Director in the study period prior to commencing study option 3 or 4.
  4. At the discretion of the Program Director, students may be granted credit for two coursework electives where students are able to provide evidence that they have successfully completed a similar postgraduate course previously. Credit will not be granted for the core courses.
  5. At the discretion of the Program Director, students who can provide evidence that they have successfully completed a similar postgraduate course or can demonstrate knowledge through professional experience will be eligible to undertake an alternate coursework elective in place of a core course. A maximum of three core courses can be replaced with alternate coursework electives.
  6. Students may be allowed to undertake coursework electives from other university postgraduate courses with the approval of the Program Director.
  7. Students are required to complete at least 3 specialist courses within one stream from streams (1-6).

 

Notes

  1. All the ICEWaRM Universities contribute expertise to the delivery of the core courses. These courses and other specified courses are delivered using 'Access Grid', an internet conference facility.
  2. It is important to note that not all coursework electives will be offered every year or study period and that timetabling difficulties may prevent enrolment in some electives. Availability of some coursework electives may be subject to minimum enrolment requirements. Students are urged to discuss their coursework electives with the Program Director.
  3. The following electives can also be selected within the Management of Water Infrastructure Stream, subject to Program rules 2 and 3, and approval of the Program Director to ensure that there is no overlap with another course already taken.
  4. The following electives can also be selected within the Water Quality and Treatment Stream, subject to Program rules 2 and 3, and approval of the Program Director to ensure that there is no overlap with another course already taken.
  5. Students should consult with the Program Director before enrolling in the Hydrology and Water Resources Advanced Topics 1 and the Hydrology and Water Resources Advanced Topics 2 courses.
