Why choose this program? You will develop in-depth skills in analysis and interpretation of real-world ecological and environmental problems. Built on an interdisciplinary foundation year in science, the program will teach you the theories and methods associated with understanding the ecology of populations, communities and ecosystems and their interactions with the natural environment. It covers the botanical and zoological background to these topics and the methodologies involved. In your first year, you'll study a broad range of courses in the biological, physical and social sciences. Second and third years focus on ecological and biological courses, addressing both theoretical and practical issues, with an emphasis on quantitative and qualitative analysis and interpretation of ecological problems, and on the oral and written communication of information. You will gain extensive experience in individual and team-based research projects in practical ecology by exploring key concepts and issues in the field, studying and researching the way that organisms interact with each other and their natural environment. You will graduate with practical field skills as well as laboratory and analytical expertise, fully prepared for a career in conservation and conservation management, the management of threatened animal and plant communities, threatening and invasive species and local, regional and global biodiversity. Professional recognition Graduates are eligible for membership of the Environment Institute of Australia and the Australian Institute of Biology. Career opportunities As a graduate, you will be welcomed by research organisations, local, state and federal government, as well as private companies involved in environmental management. You can look forward to a satisfying career in areas such as conservation and wildlife ecology, aquatic biology, forest ecology, fisheries, parks, reserves and environmental management and consulting.
