Entry requirementsA completed bachelor degree in a related discipline from a recognised higher education institution or equivalent. English language entry requirements For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are: International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Writing subscore and minimum overall score of 6.5 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of two or more years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which: - English is an official language; or
- English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of two or more years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the Program Director. Content/structureTo qualify for the Graduate Diploma students must have completed the equivalent of 36 units, including the two core courses, four generic courses and two courses from their chosen specialisation. Professional recognitionThere is currently no nationally recognised body which accredits mediation or conflict resolution training or education programs in this field. National minimum accreditation standards are currently being developed and this program will meet these standards. Various professional bodies accredit mediators on the basis of their training and the UniSA programs are recognised by these bodies for this purpose eg Association of Dispute Resolvers (LEADR), Australian Institute for Arbitrators and Mediators. Completion of the Family specialisation will meet the Commonwealth Attorney-General's standards for family law practitioners. Fee informationFees for International students: $AU 17,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010. Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units. Credit transferThe Graduate Diploma in Mediation and Conflict Resolution nests into the Master of Mediation and Conflict Resolution. Holders of the Graduate Diploma can complete the Masters by completing courses worth an additional 18 units. Students already holding a Graduate Certificate in Mediation (18 units) will be eligible for credit for the commensurate number of units in the Graduate Diploma in Mediation and Conflict Resolution. 18 units of credit will be granted for the Graduate Certificate in Legal Practice or the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from this University. Credit of up to one third of the program may be granted at the discretion of the Program Director for completed postgraduate courses with substantial content deemed relevant to Mediation and Conflict Resolution. Rules- No course which is substantially equivalent to a course taken in gaining another award may be included in the program of study.
- Graduate Diploma students are required to complete two Core courses, at least four Generic courses and up to two courses from their chosen Specialisation.
- The core course WELF 5081 Mediation Theory and Practice is a prerequisite to WELF 5082 Advanced Mediation Theory and Practice.
Notes- Students choosing the Specialisation A: Family must complete two of the specified courses in First Year. They are also advised to choose WELF 5059 Interpersonal Violence from the Generic Course list. Where family law or children are not the student's focus another relevant course can be selected with permission from the Program Director and the Course Coordinator, for example a postgraduate course on Ageing.
- Students choosing Specialisation B: Workplace Relations must complete WELF 5085 Managing Conflicts in the Workplace and one of the other specified courses in First Year.
- Students choosing Specialisation C: International Relations must choose two courses from the courses in the Graduate Diploma in International Relations and are advised to choose HUMS 5020 Culture and Disputing from the Generic Course list.
- Students choosing the Specialisation D: Elective may complete WELF 5008 Theory for Professional Practice, involving a critical review of the literature in their specialisation area, and at least one course relevant to their topic from another postgraduate program at UniSA. Alternatively they can select two courses from other UniSA postgraduate programs in the following areas - Indigenous Studies, Human Resource Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Rehabilitation Counselling or Counselling. The courses chosen from other programs at UniSA must constitute a specialisation, be at postgraduate level and be approved by the Program Director and the Course Coordinator involved.
