Aim

To enable graduates from a range of disciplines to become confident users of their chosen language and develop intercultural understanding as an adjunct to their professional knowledge and skill.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally hold a three year undergraduate degree or equivalent.

English language entry requirements

For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.5 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or

Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of two or more years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which:

• English is an official language; or
• English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
  

Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of two or more years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the Program Director.

Content/structure

To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Languages and Culture Studies, students must complete 36 units of study, with a minimum of 18 units taken from the available languages courses and the remaining units, if required, from the schedule of courses of the Graduate Diploma in International Studies or other courses as approved by the Program Director. International students only may qualify for the award by completing 36 units of English as an Additional Language courses.

Enrolment at Deakin University
Students must enrol in the Arabic courses at Deakin University, through cross-institutional enrolment. These courses are taught on-line. Students must enrol concurrently in the equivalent UniSA Arabic courses and attend face-to-face language sessions at the Magill campus of UniSA. After successful completion of the courses at Deakin University students must apply for credit at UniSA in line with cross-institutional enrolment policy.
Please note that these Arabic courses are available to UniSA students only.  They are not available to students of other Universities wishing to study cross-institutionally.

Fee information

Fees for International students: $AU 16,900 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Program requirements

Rules

1. Students may be granted credit for previous studies, studies-in-lieu or exemption from work within courses in accordance with University policy on Recognition of Prior Learning. Maximum credit allowed is normally one-third of the total units of the program.
   
   
2. Students taking Languages other than English courses may undertake study abroad for credit towards this award up to a maximum of one-third of the total units of the program, subject to prior approval from the Program Director.

Notes

1. The Graduate Diploma in Languages and Culture Studies is normally offered on a part-time basis for students taking a Language Other Than English and may take two, three or four years to complete, depending on prior learning in the chosen language and course choices. International onshore students wishing to complete the English as an Additional Language sub-major/major may take the Graduate Diploma in Languages and Culture Studies full-time over one year, subject to demand.
   
   
2. In addition to the English as an Additional Language courses, international students may take, with the approval of the Program Director, two electives in place of Professional Language Application Project A and B, these being existing courses in Languages Education or other courses in the students' discipline area.
   
   
3. Students normally study one language for the award. Depending on prior learning and in consultation with the Program Director, some students may be allowed to take one or more courses in a second language.
   
   
4. In addition to the languages listed in the schedule of courses, students may take other languages by cross-institutional enrolment up to a maximum of one-third of the total units of the program. Such students may complete the requirements of the program by choosing additional courses from the program schedule of the Graduate Diploma in Languages and Culture Studies, from the program schedule of the Graduate Diploma in International Studies or other courses as approved by the Program Director.
   
   
5. Students who have little or no previous knowledge of the language normally enrol in the first instance in the 1A language courses. Students who have completed Stage 2 SACE language studies or equivalent normally enrol first in the 2A language courses.
   
   
6. Italian is available as a minor (4 courses), sub-major (6 courses) and major (8 courses) both to students who have little or no previous knowledge of the language and students who have completed Stage 2 SACE Italian. Post Stage 2 SACE students of Italian who wish to complete 36 units in Italian must take COMM 1018 Screen Matters: Film, Television and New Media and either SOCU 5008 Culture, Language and Identity or LANG 3018 Italy Close-up: Cinematic Identities and Cultures.
   
   
7. French and Japanese are available as minors (4 courses) and sub-majors (6 courses) and majors (8 courses) for students who have little or no previous knowledge of the language or for students who have completed Stage 2 SACE in the language. Students of French or Japanese may complete the requirements of the award by choosing courses from the program schedule of the Graduate Diploma in International Studies or other courses as approved by the Program Director. Alternatively they may complete the award (9 units) by cross-institutional enrolment.
   
   
8. Arabic courses are offered externally online through Deakin University with weekly face to face tutorials at UniSA.
   
   Students enrolling in Arabic courses must fulfil the requirement to enrol concurrently in both the UniSA courses and the equivalent online courses at Deakin University via cross-institutional enrolment; upon successful completion of the Deakin courses students must apply for credit at UniSA in line with cross-institutional enrolment policy. Please refer to the Arabic Studies major. Students who have completed SACE Stage 2 Arabic or equivalent normally enrol in Arabic 2A and 2B in their first year.
   
   Arabic is available to beginner students as
   - a major (36 units made up of 4 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B plus 2 x 9 unit courses: Arabic 3A, 3B)
   - a sub-major (27 units made up of 4 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B plus 1 x 9 unit course: Arabic 3A)
   - a minor (18 units made up of 4 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B).
   
   Arabic is available to continuing students starting at Arabic 2A (eg students who have completed SACE Stage 2 Arabic or equivalent) as
   - a major (36 units made up of 2 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 2A, 2B plus 2 x 9 unit courses: Arabic 3A, 3B, plus 2 x 4.5 unit courses: LANG 3016 Professional Language Application Project A and LANG 3017 Professional Language Application Project B)
   - a sub-major (27 units made up of 2 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 2A, 2B plus 2 x 9 unit courses: Arabic 3A, 3B)
   - a minor (18 units made up of 2 x 4.5 unit courses Arabic 2A, 2B, plus 1 x 9 unit course: Arabic 3A).
