Program Code: MGJO Program Level: Postgraduate SATAC code: 4GD016 Home Campus: Magill Program Length (in EFTSL): 1 AimThe aim of this program is to provide advanced professional journalism education for graduates wishing to pursue a career in mainstream journalism or allied fields. Entry requirementsEntrants to the program will normally hold a University degree or equivalent professional qualification or professional journalism experience. English language entry requirements For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are: International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.5 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 7.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of two or more years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which: - English is an official language; or
- English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of two or more years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the Program Director. Content/structureStudents enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Journalism complete 36 units, made up of 18 units of core courses, 9 units of Journalism Electives, and a 9 unit professionally focused Graduate Project in Journalism. Fee informationFees for International students: $AU 17,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010. Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units. By negotiation with the Program Director, and with the approval of the relevant School, students are able to choose the following 9 unit course in place of their two Electives: SOCU 6001 Aboriginal Research Methods and Ethics
The program can be undertaken on a fulltime or part-time basis.
Students may choose to undertake the 9 unit course COMM 5051 Media Ethics and Responsibilities in place of Journalism Ethics G and Elective 1
Students wishing to enter the Master of Arts (Journalism) program will need to complete COMM 5027 Research Methods (Journalism) as one of their electives.
Students who have previously undertaken a media law course may be eligible for credit for LAWS 5004 Media Law G.
