Program Code: MCJO Program Level: Postgraduate SATAC code: 4GC009 Home Campus: Magill Program Length (in EFTSL): 0.5 AimThe aim of this program is to provide introductory professional journalism education for graduates wishing to pursue a career in mainstream journalism or allied fields. The Graduate Certificate in Journalism may stand alone or it may also be used as the first 18 units towards the Graduate Diploma in Journalism (36 units). Entry requirementsEntrants to the program will normally hold a University degree or equivalent professional qualification or professional journalism experience. English language entry requirements For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are: International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.5 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 7.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of two or more years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which: - English is an official language; or
- English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of two or more years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the Program Director. Content/structureThe program comprises 18 units of study made up of four 4.5 unit courses. As is appropriate in a postgraduate certificate, there is a breadth of offerings covering fundamental aspects of journalism practice and principles, including ethical dimensions and contemporary issues such as new communications technologies. This certificate provides a sound basis from which students may progress to more advanced, specialised or analytical work in the Graduate Diploma in Journalism or the Master of Arts (Journalism). Rules- Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Journalism complete 18 units of core courses.
- No course which is substantially equivalent to a course taken in gaining another award may be included in the program of study.
Notes- All courses are compulsory.
- The program is available on a full-time basis only.
