Aim

The program is designed to provide an initial education in the field of regional, urban and environmental planning. It is intended to prepare students for a career in government or private enterprise employment, and for further professional studies and research.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:

  • Qualified for the SACE; and
  • Recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and
  • Included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS);and

 Alternatively, the minimum educational requirements may be met by those who have one of the following qualifications:

  • Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for university entry under SACE;
  • Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution;
  • Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level;
  • Completed a recognised diploma or associate diploma from TAFE or Certificate IV level course;
  • Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma;
  • Qualified for Special Entry

 

For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Obtain a minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or

Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which:

  • English is an official language; or
  • English is commonly used, as determined by the University.

 

Content/structure

The Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning requires the completion of courses totalling 144 units. The courses are listed in the program schedule below. Students may select 22.5 units of courses in either Environmental Management or the Social and Community Planning majors.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor degree in Urban and Regional Planning is recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia.

Honours

The degree may be awarded with honours. Students selected for the honours stream will enrol in the courses Planning Research Project (Hons) 1 and 2.

Fee information

Fees for International students: $AU 19,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Rules

Students who have recorded outstanding achievement in the program, provided their program includes training in research methodology and research work in the final year of the program leading to the completion of Planning Research Study (Honours) 1 & 2, can be awarded the degree with Honours.

Notes

  1. Students who do not wish to pursue a major may choose electives with the approval of the Program Director.

  2. Fourth year electives may be chosen from those listed below.  Alternative courses may be selected subject to the approval of the Program Director. Not all elective courses are offered every year and are offered subject to enrolment numbers of 15 or more students.

  3. Students must discuss their planning research study or planning project with the Program Director and obtain approval prior to enrolling.
  4. Majors
    Students may graduate with a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning or they may choose to take a major in Environmental Planning or Social and Community Planning.  Students who choose to take a major will graduate with either the Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning (Environmental Planning) or Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning (Social and Community Planning). To pursue a major, students should select a stream of 18 units of courses as set out in the tables below.
