Why choose this program?
You will receive a background in environmental sciences, while focusing on core areas in environmental management, to develop an understanding of the physical, chemical, mathematical, biological and social dimensions of environmental problems and issues.
During the program's first three years, core courses will enable you to develop key knowledge and skills, with additional specialised information provided through your selected majors. These skills are integrated in the fourth year through an interdisciplinary, practical, team-oriented approach to learning. You will also have the opportunity to develop a practical understanding of environmental management through off-campus experience with employers.
This program gives you the flexibility to exit after three years with the Bachelor of Science (Environment) or to complete the fourth year and obtain the Bachelor of Environmental Management.
From 2008, you will select an area of specialisation from the following majors (subject to approval):
Environment and Health: You will learn about the interactions between human health and the environment, and how to minimise the impact of environmental factors on the health of the public and the natural environment, creating healthy communities and healthy ecosystems.
Environmental Sustainability: You will learn about how people interact with the environment, including how decisions are made about managing the environment; locally, nationally and globally. As a graduate, you will play a key role in helping society move towards an environmentally sustainable future.
Natural Resources and Pollution: You will learn about the chemical and physical aspects of the natural environment and the impacts of human waste and pollution on soil, water and air. You will eventually work in pollution monitoring and other aspects of the environment to predict the effects of humans and to minimise their impact.
Attendance
The Bachelor of Environmental Management is offered full-time on campus at the Nathan campus. You may choose to study courses at other campuses where the program structure allows. As a full-time student you will generally attend 10-20 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week.
In semester 1, Year 1, you are required to participate in a field trip lasting approximately 2 days at a local destination. If you enrol in this program, you will be expected to finance your transportation, accommodation, meals and any other expenses resulting from your participation in this field trip.
The fourth year of the Bachelor of Environmental Management consists of either 1) an additional year of coursework or 2) an honours degree (depending on grade point average). The honours degree consists of coursework plus a 40CP thesis. For the dissertation component of the honours degree, it is expected that you will be able to work independently for most of the time. The requirement for on-campus attendance is relatively flexible and unstructured. However, you will be required to meet regularly with your supervisor and it is recommended that you discuss the on-campus attendance requirements with your supervisor at the start of the dissertation.
In Semester 2, Year 4, you are required to undertake unpaid practical experience which requires part-time attendance at an organisation in the public or private sector.
Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part-time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per semester. This may affect entitlement to Centrelink benefits. International students must maintain a full-time study load.
Career opportunities
You will graduate well equipped to succeed in this challenging field, where specialist knowledge and a broad appreciation of complex environmental issues are required.
The skills you will acquire through the program's unique interdisciplinary approach will prove attractive to potential employers at all levels of government and with many diverse organisations in the private sector.
