Program Code: IBRS Program Level: Undergraduate SATAC code: 414371 Home Campus: City East Program Length (in EFTSL): 4 AimThe program is designed to produce graduates who are life-long learners who can cope with an environment of rapidly changing technologies, with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to enable them to gain professional accreditation in the specialist field of Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging). Entry requirementsApplicants are required to have one of the following qualifications: Recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at stage 2 level; and Included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS); and Obtained a competitive TER;
- Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE;
- Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points;
- Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution;
- Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level;
- Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Diploma level or above;
- Qualified for Special Entry;
- Completed the Health Sciences stream of the University of SA Foundation Studies program.
English language entry requirements In addition, International students who speak English as a foreign language must satisfy the following: International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Overall score of 6.5 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; OR Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; OR Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; OR Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which English is an official language as determined by the University. Content/structureThe Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science includes three areas of specialisation with graduates eligible for professional accreditation within a single area of expertise. Graduates will only be able to seek employment within this specialised area due to the accreditation process by the appropriate professional/registry organisations. The first two years of the program focuses on the basic sciences which underpin the study and practice of medical radiation science. Year 3 is an intensive period which focuses on the development of professional knowledge, skills and attitudes using an integrated approach with on-campus learning preceding clinical practice. The final year includes specialist professional studies, for example CT and MRI, and periods of consolidated clinical practice leading to a commencing practitioner level. 144 units of study must be completed to satisfy the award requirements. Graduates who wish to study another professional specialisation in Medical Radiation Science will be eligible for a minimum of 72 units of credit plus additional credit depending on the specialisation of the initial award. This can normally be completed over an intensive 12 month period. Professional recognitionProfessional recognition is linked with the professional accreditation process and all licensing/registration bodies require accreditation as a first step. Australian accreditation is recognised by many international countries for employment. This program is currently being progressed through the accreditation process of the Australian Institute of Radiography. HonoursStudents who achieve a credit level average in the initial years of the program may be offered the opportunity to complete Honours in the fourth year. Students who successfully complete the Honours program will be awarded the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging) with Honours. Fee informationFees for International students: $AU 20,275 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010. Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units. RulesPolice Check: All students in the Division of Health Sciences who undertake field or clinical placements, or participate in University clinics as part of their program, must have had a police clearance prior to the commencement of any placement or clinic activity. - Students must successfully complete a recognised first aid course before they will be able to commence clinical placement in the course 'Introductory Medical Radiation Practice' and must maintain a current CPR certificate for the remainder of the program.
- Students are required to satisfy the standard of dress and behaviour prescribed by institutions in which clinical placements are undertaken. Failure to satisfy such requirements may prevent students from completing the program.
- As part of professional accreditation requirements, all students are required to complete the course 'Professional Work Experience' prior to graduation. This requirement is 10 weeks of rostered clinical practice which will normally be completed during non-academic weeks in the early part of year 3 of the program. Grading in the course 'Professional Work Experience' will remain incomplete until the student satisfies all the requirements to receive a non-graded pass.
- Maximum credit allowed is based on the following: the student must normally complete at least the equivalent of one year of full time study.
Notes- Students will enrol in their preferred speciality at the commencement of the program. Transfer between speciality streams is only permitted within the bounds of available clinical placements and, where necessary, will involve ranking by academic performance in the first year.
- The professional practice courses form a significant part of the program and students are required to be reasonably fit to successfully undertake this component.
- Medical Imaging speciality students will normally be required to complete a minimum four week clinical placement at a rural or interstate location. Students in other speciality areas may also be required to undertake an out of Adelaide placement.
- The Broadening Undergraduate Education (BUGE) elective is to be selected from any discipline area approved as contrasting with the discipline category of the professional core.
- Students who achieve a grade point average or above (credit level average) in the courses which comprise the first three years of the program may be considered for the Honours program. A quota of places is offered each year to applicants in an academically ranked order. An invitation to undertake Honours will normally be made during the second half of the third year of the program.
