Program Code: DBDI Program Level: Undergraduate SATAC code: 424071 Home Campus: City West Program Length (in EFTSL): 4 AimTo graduate students into the profession of Industrial Design who are capable of designing and implementing socially and environmentally responsive environments, objects, products and systems. Entry requirementsApplicants are required to have one of the following qualifications: Qualified for the SACE: - recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and
- included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS); and
- obtained a competitive TER;
Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; Completed the University Foundation Studies program. Special entry provisions may also apply for ATSI applicants. English language entry requirements For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are: International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which: - English is an official language; or
- English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
Content/structureThe program is a four year full-time or part-time equivalent program. Year 1 introduces students to basic skills and concepts and establishes a theoretical framework. Year 2 and Year 3 develop competence in core areas. Year 4 expands the intellectual and professional areas of the program and provides scope for specialisation through electives.
The program requires completion of courses comprising 144 units. Professional recognitionGraduates of the Bachelor of Industrial Design are eligible for Associate Membership of the Design Institute of Australia. HonoursThe degree may be awarded with Honours for meritorious performance in the program. Selection will be made in accordance with University procedures. Fee informationFees for International students: $AU 19,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010. Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units. Rules- Students progress through the program by years. They must complete one year before undertaking courses from the next year. With the permission of the Program Director, student may carry one course failure, other than an Industrial Design Studio, forward to the next year.
- All prerequisites must be fulfilled for courses undertaken. Exemptions to this rule may be with the permission of the Program Director.
A total of 9 units must conform with the Broadening Undergraduate Education Matrix as Contrasting Studies. Students must complete ARCH 3048 Indigenous Design Perspectives and GRAP 2026 Introduction to Graphics to satisfy university requirements for BUGE content. - Students must normally complete the degree within 4 years of full-time study (or the equivalent of part-time study) from the date of their initial enrolment, not including any periods of approved leave of absence or enforced suspension.
- Students invited to undertake the Honours program will be required to undertake the courses ARCH 4013 LLS Honours Research 1 and ARCH 4014 LLS Honours Research 2 in lieu of one Elective and one Advanced Elective.
Notes- Students are required to complete three Elective courses (unless enrolled in Honours). These are designed to extend and expand students' intellectual and professional abilities in core and cognate areas of the curriculum and to provide scope for individual development in particular areas of professional and academic interest. A selection of electives will be offered each year, depending on staff availability and student demand.

Students who have a Grade Point Average of 4.5 or more and wish to independently pursue a topic of interest not available in the electives offered in any one study period may choose either a research- or project-based individual elective with the approval of the Program Director. - Students wishing to undertake a minor stream in Sustainable Industrial Design Strategies, Form for Industry or Furnishing Design for Manufacture must complete 18 units of minor stream courses. These courses must include Materials and Processes A plus the relevant following three electives:
a) Sustainable Industrial Design Strategies: ARCH 2037 Sustainable Design Strategies ARCH 2038 Sustainable Futures ARCH 3036 LLS Extra Projects (Advanced) or ARCH 4014 LLS Honours Research 2 (project focus specific to stream)
b) Form for Industry: ARCH 2028 Morphology and Logic of Form and Function ARCH 2054 Aesthetics of Three Dimensional Form ARCH 3036 LLS Extra Projects (Advanced) or ARCH 4014 LLS Honours Research 2 (project focus specific to stream)

Students must notify the Program Director that they wish to undertake a minor stream by the end of Week 13 in the first half of their 3rd Year.
