Aim

To provide students with a sound knowledge in the theory and skills in human communication, media and cultural studies and to prepare students for careers in a range of communication fields including public relations, advertising, marketing, arts administration and in all areas of the Creative Industries.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:

Qualified for the SACE:

  • recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and 
  • included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS); and  
  • obtained a competitive TER;

Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; 

Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the University Foundation Studies program.

Special entry provisions may also apply for ATSI applicants.

English language entry requirements

For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or

Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which:

  • English is an official language; or
  • English is commonly used, as determined by the University.

 

 

Content/structure

The Bachelor of Communication (Media and Culture) is equivalent to three years of full time study or 108 units. The program includes:

 

  • a professional major of eight courses (8 x 4.5 unit courses - total 36 units)
  • a foundation program (5 x 4.5 unit courses - total 22.5 units)
  • a general studies sub-major (6 x 4.5 unit courses - total 27 units)
  • 5 professional concentration courses or 5 electives (5 x 4.5 unit courses - total 22.5 units)

 

Fee information

Fees for International students: $AU 17,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Notes

  1. The professional major of 36 units is made up of eight courses (8 x 4.5 unit courses) of which six are core courses and two are professional major options. The 6 x 4.5 unit core courses are:

  3. The general studies sub-major (27 units) can be taken in a wide range of disciplines. Not all general studies sub-majors are available on each campus. Students enrolled in a professional major on one campus may enrol in a general studies sub-major on another campus. Students may not enrol in the Communication, Media and Culture sub-major.

  4. Students may choose to complete either 5 courses (22.5 units) of professional concentration courses chosen from courses listed on the schedule; or 5 courses (22.5 units) of electives chosen from any courses offered in the University, including courses from the field of their professional major or general studies sub-major. Electives may be selected from the Professional Major Optional Courses/Professional Concentration Courses listed on the schedule.

  5. The following course is available in both the first and second half of the year:
    COMM 2060 Communication, Culture and Indigenous Australians

  6. COMM 3014 Communication Practicum 2 requires the equivalent of 5 full days of placement in a workplace and individual sessions with supervising staff.

  7. International students may enrol in the 9 unit COMM 3041 Communication Practices in place of both COMM 3013 Communication Practices 1 and COMM 3014 Communication Practices 2. The documented permission of the Program Director is required.

  8. COMM 2041 Creative Industries and Ethics is a prerequisite for COMM 3043 Internship in Communication, Media and Culture.

  9. COMM 1018 Screen Matters: Film, Television and New Media is a prerequisite for LANG 3018 Italy Close-up: Cinematic Identities and Cultures.

  10. A three year Bachelor of Marketing and Communication is available.
