Aim

To provide students with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in organisational communication and media management, including public relations, writing and document development for print, radio, television and electronic media, the role of communication in organisations, and the issues of international relations and media.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:

Qualified for the SACE:

  • recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and 
  • included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS); and  
  • obtained a competitive TER;

Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; 

Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the University Foundation Studies program.

Special entry provisions may also apply for ATSI applicants.

English language entry requirements

For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or

Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which:

  • English is an official language; or
  • English is commonly used, as determined by the University.

 

Content/structure

The Bachelor of Arts (Communication and Media Management) is equivalent to three years of full time study or 108 units, comprising the 36 unit major, 22.5 units of foundation courses, an 18 unit cognate (minor), a 27 unit general studies sub-major, and one 4.5 unit elective.

 

Fee information

Fees for International students: $AU 17,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Notes

  1. Foundation courses totalling 22.5 units are common to all students an enrolled in the undergraduate programs offered within the School of Communication.
  2.  A general studies sub-major (27 units) consists of six courses with no more than two courses at level 1 and at least two courses at level 2. General studies sub-majors can be taken in a wide range of disciplines. Not all general studies sub-majors are available on each campus. Students enrolled in a professional major on one campus may enrol in a general studies sub-major on another campus.
  3. A cognate (18 units) or minor consists of four courses with no more than two courses at level 1. Students wishing to vary a sub-major should seek advice from the Program Director.
  4. Students take 4.5 units of electives chosen from any courses offered in the University, including courses from the field of their professional major, cognate or general studies sub-major.
  5. International students may, with the approval of the Program Director, take a second elective instead of COMM 2060 Communication, Culture and Indigenous Australians.
  6. Students may enrol in LIBR 1008 Information Skills instead of COMM 1043 Issues in Publication and Design subject to course availability.
  7. Students may enrol in COMM 3023 International Media Communications instead of INFT 1014 Introduction to Digital Media with the approval of the Program Director and subject to course availability.
  8. Students may enrol in COMM 3055 Communicating Science or COMM 2040 Consuming Media: Communication Industries and their Audiences instead of COMM 3007 Creative and Feature Writing for the Media subject to course availability.
  9. The schedule shown is for a typical full-time program. The order of courses may be varied to suit individual students provided that timetabling constraints and prerequisite requirements are satisfied.
