Description: 
   People awarded the Graduate Diploma of Forensic Odontology should be capable of (1) dealing independently with all routine forensic odontological casework; (2) efficient referral of cases of special difficulty outside or beyond their expertise; (3) functioning under supervision as a member of a Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team; (4) independent preparation of evidence for presentation to courts of law; and (5) being aware of their own need for further education in forensic odontology.
Admission requirements: 
   A Bachelor of Dental Science degree from this University, or equivalent status, and at least two years of experience in the practice of general dentistry

Structure: 
   The course comprises four 12-point units. These include The Law and Law Enforcement covering topics such as the law, court structure and functions, dental jurisprudence, the role of the expert witness, report writing and scene-of-crime protocol; Forensic Medicine and Pathology which includes topics on forensic pathology, anthropology and odontology, forensic gathering of specimens and analysis, and disaster victim identification; Basic Dental Science which looks at human craniofacial anatomy, human dental embryology, anatomy and histology and facial reconstruction; and Applied Dental Science which includes dental materials, prosthetic techniques for recording and replication of tissue injuries and specimens, radiology and superimposition, analysis of dental trauma both hard and soft tissue injuries, dental age estimation and retrieval of DNA profiles from dental material.
