An applicant who does not have a Bachelor of Music with at least upper second class honours or whose major field of study has not been music may be required to pass a qualifying examination or undertake preliminary study.
Applicants for the Master of Music (by Thesis and Coursework) in composition are required to submit a portfolio of compositions to the Head of School before lodging an application for admission to the Faculty Student Office.

| | Minimum credit points required: | | | 72 | | Structure: | | | The Master of Music can be taken in either Composition or Performance and consists of a combination of thesis and creative work. For full-time students, the course comprises these units: MUSC8110 Master of Music Research Seminar 1 (12 points); MUSC8120 Master of Music Research Seminar 2 (12 points); and MUSC9311 Master of Music Thesis—Composition (48 points) or MUSC9411 Master of Music Thesis—Performance (48 points).
For Composition, the research/creative components comprise a composition folio, which shows technical accomplishment and imaginative resource, and a lecture/demonstration of 45 minutes' duration. Both components are assessed by external examination. Each research seminar requires the submission for assessment of a major research paper, prepared under supervision.
For Performance, the research/creative components comprise a public recital of 65 to 80 minutes' duration, which demonstrates advanced technical and interpretative accomplishment, and a lecture/recital of 45 minutes' duration. Both components are assessed by external examination.
