About Taiwan Taiwan's total land area is only about 3,6000 square kilometers; it is shaped like a tobacco leaf that is narrow at both ends. It lies off the southeastern coast of mainland Asia, across the Taiwan Straits from Mainland China. Taiwan lies on the western edge of the Pacific "rim of fire," and continuous tectonic movements have created majestic peaks, rolling hills and plains, basins, coastlines, and other wonders. Taiwan sees climates of many types: tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate, providing clear differentiation between the different seasons. he cultural aspects also not to be missed. The blending of Hakka, Taiwanese, and mainland Chinese cultures has produced a rich plethora of cultural and social color. Whether it is religion, architecture, language, living habits, or food, it's just one big exciting melting pot! Food is the best representative of this cultural mixing and matching. Education system The educational system in Taiwan is similar to that of many US universities. Taiwan's strong reputation in the field of technological education attracts students from developing countries for the study of bio-tech, semi-conductor technology, Taiwan's technological universities and institutions have earned respect for Taiwan and its developments, within the international community. Research areas include bio-informatics, information security, open source and artificial intelligence, learning and digital content, web services and mobile computing to name a few, business, forestry, agriculture, animal husbandry, chemistry, to name a few. Bachelor's degree is awarded in most fields after four years of study. The Bachelor of Medicine requires seven years, the Bachelor of Dentistry six years, and the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine five years. In addition, some law and architecture departments require five years.Two additional years in the same subject earn a master's degree; and with three more years of study, a doctorate is awarded. Language requirements Most courses are taught in Taiwanese, however there are a growing number of postgraduate and some undergraduate taught in English. Term dates The regular academic year, which runs from September to June, has two terms.
