| From 2008, all commencing students will be required to sit a 25-minute English communication screening test in the second week of Semester I. Students who are identified through the testing to have unsatisfactory English communication proficiency will be given assistance by the School to improve their English communication skills. For students admitted prior to 2008, participating in the test is voluntary. However, all students are strongly advised to undertake the test so that, if necessary, they can be provided with support to improve their English communication skills. | |||
Why choose this program?
This program provides a balanced education in the pharmaceutical sciences and a pathway to either professional pharmacy, or a career in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or other allied industries, or in drug research.
If you intend to be a pharmacist you should complete this degree and then apply to enter Griffith's Master of Pharmacy. These two integrated programs lead to registration as a pharmacist. If either of these programs is completed in isolation, registration will not be possible.
Attendance
The Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science is offered full-time on campus at the Gold Coast campus.
As a full-time student you will generally attend 22-24 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week.
Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part-time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per semester. This may affect entitlement to Centrelink benefits. International students must maintain a full-time study load.
Students are required to complete all first and second year courses prior to commencing third year.
Work Experience/Placement: In Semesters 1 and 2 of your final year, you are required to undertake unpaid practical experience which requires full-time attendance at a pharmaceutical work place on a few occasions. Some placements may be outside the Gold Coast area.
Professional recognition
Students who graduate will gain direct entry into the full-fee paying Master of Pharmacy degree, which requires 18 months of full-time study at the Gold Coast campus. To seek registration as a pharmacist, graduates from the masters degree will be required to complete 48 weeks of preregistration training and comply with all other statutory requirements.
Career opportunities
As a graduate you will have a pathway to either professional pharmacy, drug research or a career in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or other health industries. You will also have a good basis for further postgraduate training in a health professional area, other than pharmacy. A pharmacy career is open to those who continue on to Griffith's postgraduate Master of Pharmacy, followed by pre-registration training.
Griffith's Pharmaceutical Science degree provides the required training to move into careers in pharmacy, biotechnology or drug discovery research.
