Imagine playing a computer game, browsing the web or even watching a film without music or sound to create atmosphere, excitement and build tension. Sound is important in these environments, but there?s a whole lot more to sound design than this conventional understanding. Practical teaching This is a studio based course and you will develop a unique set of crossover sound skills. You will work with Bachelor of Music students to learn how sound is organised musically and about the dynamics of performance and presentation as they apply to sound design. Industry links You will have access to the music and sound industry through internships and media opportunities and you will launch your career through public presentations. Course structure Sound design at QUT is much broader than ?sound to film? and caters for the new and emergent creative industries that operate in audio, music, visual, online and immersive environments. It involves sound recording, digital audio processing, sound art, contemporary sonic composition techniques, sound for animation, film and computer games and immersive soundscape design.
There is an emphasis on creativity. You will be encouraged to explore new connections between sound design, sound art and established musical styles. Career outcomes Graduates work as sound designers for film and television, Web applications and games. Many are also, DJs, electronic musicians, recording engineers, producers and developers of music software. There are pathways available for honours and professional or research postgraduate studies. Additional Entry Requirements Applicants are selected on the basis of their portfolio and previous academic achievement. Overview Sound design incorporates working in audio, music, moving images, online and immersive environments. It is applied to recording, sequencing, generative and composition techniques, sound for animation, contemporary digital sound environments and immersive soundscape design. It is much broader than the traditional understanding of sound design (sound to film) to cater for the new creative industries that now exist, and those that will emerge. This course prepares you for practice in the creative industries and includes pathways to honours and postgraduate degrees. Career Outcomes Graduates can work in sound design for film and television, Web applications, games and exhibitions or as DJs. Course Structure In order to complete this course, students must undertake two Creative Industries Foundation units, a maximum of 18 discipline or specified units relating to the chosen major and a minimum of four electives. Other Course Options You can also choose from double degree programs including IX34 Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Creative Industries (Sound Design) and IX27 Bachelor of Creative Industries (Sound Design)/Bachelor of Information Technology.
