Why choose this course?
Have you considered a career as a business advisor to large corporations or small business? Perhaps an auditor, investigating the management of organisations and agencies in the corporate or government sectors? Maybe you would like to start your own company, work as a consultant, or provide business, tax or financial advice to individuals? Careers in accounting involve a lot of figures. However, most clients don¿t understand what the figures mean. Regardless of your work setting, your ability to crunch the numbers, interpret them, and communicate what they mean in simple terms is in demand. This need for someone to analyse the financial data, communicate the options and offer advice to individuals, business clients, or even your employer, is what makes accounting such a diverse and interesting profession. If guiding financial activities in the world of business sounds like an interesting challenge, then accountancy is the right career for you.

More about Accountancy
An accounting qualification is an ideal platform for any business career. Accredited accountants are highly employable, and enjoy the benefits of a profession that's recognisable throughout the world.

Accounting Connexions program
Accounting Connexions helps you settle into university life by matching first-year students up with established accountancy students. You'll get to know how university works, where the library and computer labs are, and meet other students.

Career Preparation program
Our focus on career preparation gives you access to vacation work programs with accounting firms, the opportunity to develop personal connections with established professionals and build interview and application skills. QUTASA, the university's accountancy student association, is instrumental in organising many of these activities.

Real world focus
Our Johnston Rorke Boardroom Seminar Series gives second-year students a feel for corporate life, with the opportunity to talk to partners of the firm about real client cases. Our Career Choices seminars feature guest speakers who explain their career path and share their "day in the life" experiences.

In third year you will have the opportunity to undertake an organised work experience placement with an accounting firm or in an organisation in the media, community, banking or government sector. Demonstrating your ability to apply your knowledge in a real workplace is another way you can stand out from the crowd to future employers.

Course Combinations and Career Outcomes
Extending your major with further accounting units will ensure your eligibility for programs run by the ICAA and CPA Australia for professional recognition as a Chartered Accountant or Certified Practising Accountant.

Knowledge in professional accounting will set you up for a career in any accounting firm, large or small. You can explore financial accounting options in a range of industries, work for government employers such as the Australian Taxation Office or Queensland Audit Office, or launch your career in the growth area of forensic accounting.

Your other accounting option is to gain specialist knowledge in the areas of business law and tax. With further knowledge of taxation, company and financial institutions law, you'll be prepared for a career in tax and financial planning for individuals.

Combining your accountancy studies with banking and finance provides the opportunity for professional recognition in both areas, and widens your career opportunities to encompass corporate advisory services including takeovers, mergers and acquisitions, new company floats, the funding of operations, investment of funds and Treasury management within the government sector.

Other Majors
See also separate entries for the following majors in this course: Advertising, Banking and Finance, Economics, Human Resource Management, International Business, Management, Marketing, and Public Relations.

Professional Recognition
Professional recognition by either of the industry bodies, CPA Australia or the ICAA, is considered essential for many careers in accounting. Our close relationships with CPA Australia and ICAA ensure our courses are developed in conjunction with industry needs and meet guidelines for associate membership and enrolment in their professional programs. You will also meet the academic component of the requirements for enrolment in the Graduate Diploma in Applied Corporate Governance at the Chartered Secretaries Australia (CSA).
