Why choose this program?

This program reinforces the importance of the human relationship between nurse and client which is fundamental to successful outcomes. Health care services are changing rapidly and so too is the work of nurses, who today must not only react to illness and stress, but also be technically skilled, proactive and able to work in partnership with others in helping people enjoy healthier lives.

Year 1, you will develop a broad perspective, learning the language and experience of nursing and health care. The clinical focus will be on the healthy body and the total nurse-client relationship.

Year 2, your studies will focus on developing technical and practical knowledge and skills. The clinical focus will be on acute and high-acuity nursing in real world settings to help you develop critical aspects of nursing responses, achieve competence and be able to meet industry demands.

Year 3, you will learn how to interpret and reconstruct the language, experience and practices of nursing. The clinical focus will accommodate your special interests and provide extended off-campus work experience to prepare you for starting your career, coupled with academic study to help you develop into a confident, effective, committed nurse, and a lifelong learner.

Strands include:

  • Graduate Entry strand*

Attendance

The Bachelor of Nursing is offered full-time on campus at the Gold Coast campus.

As a full-time student, you will generally attend 15-20 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week.

Students may take a reduced study load. You will be classed as a part-time student if you enrol in less than 30 credit points per semester. This may affect entitlement to Centrelink benefits. International students must maintain a full-time study load.

If you wish to study part-time throughout the program, a program structure showing a sequence of courses is provided so you can undertake 8-12 hours of scheduled classes per week. However, attendance at daytime classes may be required.

In second and third years in the Bachelor of Nursing, it is compulsory to enrol in some clinical courses which commence at the beginning of February (prior to the start of Semester 1). These courses are delivered in intensive mode. Dates over which these clinical courses will run will be published on a semester-by-semester basis within the University Timetable. It is expected that if you enrol in these courses you will be available to attend. Part-time students may have to be available full-time for some professional placements.

Graduate Entry strand

The Graduate Entry strand of the Bachelor of Nursing is offered full-time on-campus at the Nathan, Logan and Gold Coast campuses from Semester 1, 2008.

This strand is not available for International students.
