As one of the most diverse of all the health professions, a degree in nursing provides opportunities for employment in many different areas of health care including and beyond the traditional hospital ward. Advanced standing is automatically awarded to applicants with a completed degreee in another discipline (see Bachelor of Nursing-Graduate Entry). Students with a completed Diploma of Nursing (Pre-enrolment) will automatically receive one year of advanced standing (96 credit points) and can complete the degree in two years full-time.
The course provides a good balance of nursing theory and practice, and you will undertake supporting studies in biological, behavioural and social science, and the humanities. You will be supervised by academic and clinical staff considered leaders in the nursing field. Approximately half of the learning experiences are clinically based to ensure you gain extensive practical experience as a nurse. Clinical placements are available in a range of public and private hospitals and community services throughout Brisbane and in regional and rural areas of Queensland. Career Options Nursing graduates are in high demand and have excellent employment opportunities in a variety of health care settings or health promotion agencies. These include public and private hospitals and nursing homes, as well as community service areas such as community health, occupational health, domiciliary nursing services, school health, Aboriginal health, pathology laboratories, alcohol and drug dependence and the armed services.
Many nurses specialise in a specific area such as aged care, mental health, paediatrics, midwifery, intensive care, cancer, medical/surgical, community practice, emergency or women's health.
Nurses are in demand all over the world and QUT nursing graduates have been successful in obtaining employment overseas, including in Britain, New Zealand and North America. Professional Membership This course is recognised by the Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) as satisfying the academic requirements for admission as a professional member. The Bachelor of Nursing is an accredited Nursing Pre-registration course of the Queensland Nursing Council (QNC). Graduate entry Students with a complete degree are eligible to be considered for Bachelor of Nursing - Graduate Entry program. Diploma entry Students with a completed Diploma of Nursing (Pre-enrolment), Diploma of Nursing (Post-enrolment), or Diploma of Nursing Care (Pre-enrolment) from TAFE or Shafston Institute of Technology will receive one year of academic credit will be automatically awarded by QUT Admissions after the QTAC offer and prior to the start of classes.
If you have one the above diplomas and receive an offer, you will be able to undertake the diploma entry enrolment program that allows you to complete the Bachelor of Nursing in two years. Other course requirements It is a requirement of Queensland Health that all students undertaking a clinical placement in a Q health facility complete The Essentials component of the student orientation package which is available on the Queensland Health website.
blue cardAs required by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act (2000) students must undergo a criminal history check and be issued with a Suitability Care (Blue Card) before commencing field experience/practicum in an organisation where they may work with children or young people. This is a mandatory requirement that must be met prior to undertaking any field experience/practicum program throughout your course.
additional costsThe clinical practice units require students to undertake block practicums of two or more weeks duration. Block practicums may be scheduled during semester breaks. Students will be required to wear a uniform while on clinical practice, the cost of which is approximately $150. Students enrolling in this program are required to complete a course of vaccinations for Hepatitis B before commencing their clinical practice units. They are also required to have a current Senior First Aid Certificate or the equivalent prior to commencement of Clinical Practice 1. Caboolture campus The Bachelor of Nursing will be progressively offered at the Caboolture campus for full-time students only. In 2007, only the first year was offered, with second and third year to be introduced in 2008 and 2009.
International student places are not currently offered at Caboolture campus.
