Why choose this course? As the oldest provider of nursing education in Queensland, QUT?s school of nursing has a long and proven record of providing quality education in a range of general and specialist nursing disciplines. Although only a relatively new course, this degree combines the complementary disciplines of nursing and health management. Graduates have the qualification to apply for registration as a nurse with the Queensland Nursing Council and also the development to pursue their nursing careers in senior positions in the health care industry. With an ever increasing demand for multi-skilled professionals, the Bachelor of Nursing and Health Services Management degree offers a unique blend of business/management and nursing subjects, to give graduates a competitive edge. Overview This four-year degree program combines the complementary areas of nursing and health services management. The clinical and practical aspects of nursing are combined with the managerial and administrative side of health care delivery to provide you with a breadth of relevant knowledge and experience. This course features both theoretical and practical subjects, including clinical placements ensuring you gain extensive, hands-on experience as a nurse. The course structure provides a balance of nursing and health management subjects including behavioural sciences, mental health, professional development, finance, planning and health promotion. Career Options Nurses work in public and private hospitals, residential care facilities, private homes, schools, pathology laboratories, medical clinics and other community-based and private work environments.
Graduates can also seek employment opportunities in managerial roles within the health sector. Professional Membership This course is recognised by the Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) as satisfying the academic requirements for admission as a professional member. It is also an accredited nursing preregistration course of the Queensland Nursing Council (QNC). For further information on the requirements for QNC registration please refer to www.qnc.qld.gov.au Graduates are also eligible for membership of the Australian College of Health Service Executives (ACHSE). Honours A degree with honours may be awarded to students who have recorded outstanding achievement in the four-year program. Other Course Requirements The clinical practice units require students to undertake block practicums of two or more weeks duration. Students will be required to wear a uniform while on clinical practice, the cost of which is approximately $150. Students enrolling in this program are required to complete a course of vaccinations for Hepatitis B before commencing their clinical practice units. They are also required to have a current Senior First Aid Certificate or the equivalent prior to commencement of Clinical Practice 1.
As required by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act (2000) students must undergo a criminal history check and be issued with a Suitability Care (Blue Card) before commencing field experience/practicum in an organisation where they may work with children or young people. This is a mandatory requirement that must be met prior to undertaking any field experience/practicum program throughout your course.
It is a requirement of Queensland Health that all students undertaking a clinical placement in a Q health facility complete 'The Essentials' component of the student orientation package which is available on the Queensland Health website. Course Structure
